“THE TIGER WILL NOT BE PUT DOWN” — YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK REVEALS ALTAI’S FATE AFTER FATAL ATTACK

After a 24-year-old man died in a tragic incident inside a tiger enclosure, the wildlife park has issued a clear statement about the animal at the centre of the tragedy.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park has confirmed that Altai, the Amur tiger involved in the fatal incident, will not be euthanised.

The announcement came after William Chapman died on October 10, 2026, following an incident at the park near Doncaster, England. The tragedy sparked widespread public concern, with many people asking what would happen to the tiger.

In a statement published on October 15, the park reassured the public that Altai was safe and well and that his welfare remained a priority for its experienced animal-care team.

Police were called to Yorkshire Wildlife Park at approximately 1:35 p.m. on October 10 after reports that a man had entered a tiger enclosure.

According to evidence heard at the opening of the inquest, Chapman climbed over two fences and entered the animals’ area. He was fatally injured in an encounter with the tiger.

Emergency services attended, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The park was evacuated as police began investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The zoo’s decision about Altai

Following the tragedy, Yorkshire Wildlife Park said it had received numerous messages from members of the public concerned about the tiger.

The park’s response was unequivocal: Altai would not be put down as a result of the incident.

The statement also expressed sympathy for William Chapman’s family and loved ones, while thanking people who had offered support to park employees affected by the event.

Altai’s ongoing welfare, the park said, remained a priority.

Yorkshire Wildlife Park reopened to visitors on Friday, October 16, including its Land of the Tigers attraction.

Visitors returned to the park while the investigation continued. The authorities have not yet published a final account of all the circumstances surrounding the death.

The City of Doncaster Council has launched a health and safety investigation, and the park continues to assist South Yorkshire Police and other relevant agencies.

The reopening does not mean the investigation is over.

A tragedy with lasting consequences

The incident has left William Chapman’s loved ones grieving and deeply affected staff and witnesses.

It has also prompted difficult discussions about wildlife safety, enclosure boundaries and how incidents involving endangered animals should be handled.

For now, the park has made its position clear: Altai will remain at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, where his care will continue under the supervision of the animal team.

The question of the tiger’s fate has been answered. But the investigation into how this tragedy happened is still ongoing.

May William Chapman rest in peace.
