“OH MY GOD, WHAT HAVE I DONE?” — TWO DEAD, INCLUDING A 6-YEAR-OLD BOY, AFTER TRUCK PLOUGHS INTO YOUTH SOCCER MATCH

Eleven people were hospitalized after a pickup truck drove onto a soccer field in Wichita, Kansas. Families had gathered to watch children play when the afternoon turned into a devastating emergency.

A Saturday afternoon youth soccer match in Kansas ended in tragedy after a pickup truck drove onto a field crowded with young players, parents and spectators, leaving two people dead and 11 others hospitalized.

The incident happened on October 17 at Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, where emergency crews responded to what police described as a mass-casualty event.

The victims were identified as six-year-old Adrian Cole and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer, both from McPherson, Kansas. They were not related.

Five of those injured were children between the ages of five and nine, according to reporting by The Irish Sun. The other injured people ranged in age up to 68.

For the families who had arrived expecting an ordinary afternoon of youth sports, the incident brought sudden grief and confusion.

Witnesses described a black pickup truck travelling across the playing fields and striking multiple people before eventually stopping some distance away.

Vanessa Trammell, whose 13-year-old son had been playing at a nearby field, told CNN that the team had gathered on the sidelines when the truck entered the area.

“We thought it was going to stop but then it like kept going,” she recalled.

She described the scene as one of immediate panic, with people trying to understand what was happening and locate their loved ones.

Parents and other bystanders rushed to help those who had been injured before emergency responders arrived. Police officials later praised members of the public for stepping in during the critical moments following the incident.

What is known about the driver?

Police said the driver was a 34-year-old woman who had two children in the vehicle. She remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Witnesses told reporters that she appeared distressed after the incident and was heard saying, “Oh my God, what have I done?”

Authorities have not established what caused the truck to enter the playing area or how fast it was travelling.

On Sunday, officials said the woman had been released without charge while investigators continued examining the circumstances, including toxicology results and the vehicle’s mechanical condition.

Police have emphasised that no charges had been filed at that stage. Investigators have also not publicly determined whether the incident was intentional or accidental.

The deaths of Adrian Cole and Nicholas Schafer have left two families facing an unimaginable loss.

Wichita Mayor Lily Wu expressed her condolences, highlighting the particular heartbreak of a child losing his life during an event that families had attended to support young players.

“Families came to Stryker Sports Complex to enjoy a Saturday afternoon watching their children play soccer. No one could have imagined the tragedy that would unfold,” she said.

Her statement reflected the shock felt across the community as families waited for more information.

The investigation continues

Investigators have interviewed more than 30 witnesses and appealed for anyone with relevant video footage to come forward.

Authorities are working to establish how the vehicle accessed the field, what happened immediately before the collision and whether any mechanical or other factors contributed.

Stryker Sports Complex cancelled its scheduled events following the incident as the investigation continued.

For now, many questions remain unanswered. Officials have urged the public not to jump to conclusions while evidence is being reviewed.

An afternoon that changed everything

Youth sports are often a place where children build friendships, families gather and communities come together. That is what people had come to Stryker Sports Complex to enjoy.

Instead, two lives were lost and numerous others were injured in an incident that has left the community mourning.

As investigators work to establish what happened, the focus remains on the victims, the families who are grieving and the people recovering from their injuries.

The answers may take time. But for the loved ones of Adrian Cole and Nicholas Schafer, the loss is already devastating.
