Twin Girls Given a New Beginning After Rare and Complex Separation Surgery

Giving birth to twins is not very common. In fact, twins are born 1 time in every 200,000 births.

But in the case of conjoined twins, unfortunately life prospects are very low, almost half do not survive childbirth – and only 25% survive it and are also alive.

Erin and Abby Delaney were born in the summer of 2016, united by a very complicated area. The two newborns were joined at the top of their heads, which made their separation extremely complicated.

Leaving them together would have made her life quite difficult, but at the same time the operation was enormously complicated.

The children’s hospital in Philadelphia decided to perform one of the most complicated operations ever performed by the hospital.

It took a full team of surgeons and specialists for each of the girls and 11 hours of difficult and quick actions to prevent excessive bleeding and complications. With a lot of love, care and skill, both babies were successfully separated.

“They are happy girls, despite everything they have been through in their young age,” explains their mother.

Five months after the intervention, the girls will be able to go home, where they will grow up and will live with their parents interacting with them in their own rooms.

According to their mother, Heather Delaney, the girls are responding very well.

“They are not afraid of people. It’s fantastic to see how strong they’ve been throughout the process they’ve been through.”

During their first moments of life, the girls had to adapt to each other. One baby couldn’t do anything without it affecting the other.

Now Erin can sit down while Abby learns to roll. It’s been a long journey, but Abby and Erin have finally had a new lease on life!
