A DAY OF RACING TURNS TO GRIEF — OHOPE WINS EUTHANISED AFTER CAULFIELD CUP FALL NEAR THE FINISH LINE

A dramatic fall in the closing stages of Australia’s prestigious Caulfield Cup ended in heartbreak, claiming the life of a much-loved mare and leaving two leading jockeys needing hospital treatment.

The excitement of the 2026 Caulfield Cup turned to silence and sadness when a fall near the finish line changed the day for everyone watching.

With approximately 200 metres remaining in the 2,400-metre race, Half Yours, the previous year’s Melbourne Cup winner, fell in the home straight. His jockey, Mark Zahra, was dislodged, and Ohope Wins, ridden by Jye McNeil, also fell after being unable to avoid the incident.

For Ohope Wins, the consequences were devastating.

On-course veterinarians immediately attended to the four-year-old mare, but her injuries were too severe for her to be saved. Racing Victoria later confirmed that she was humanely euthanised.

The announcement sent a wave of sadness through the racing community, particularly among the people who had trained, cared for and followed her throughout her career.

Ohope Wins was more than a promising racehorse. She was a dual Oaks winner who had achieved major success in both New Zealand and Australia, including victory in the Australian Oaks earlier in 2026.

Her death has left her connections grieving a talented mare whose racing career ended far too soon.

Trainer Chris Waller and owner Yulong paid tribute to Ohope Wins in an emotional statement following the incident.

They remembered her as a true star on the track, but emphasised that to the people who cared for her every day, she meant much more.

“She was brave. She was kind. She was full of character, but more importantly, she was loved.”

Those words captured the personal loss behind the racing headlines. For stable staff and trainers, the bond with a horse develops through countless hours of care, preparation and shared experiences.

Her former trainers in New Zealand also remembered her kindness, athleticism and willingness to learn, describing her as a special horse with exceptional talent.

TWO JOCKEYS TAKEN TO HOSPITAL

The fall also raised immediate concerns for Zahra and McNeil, who were both taken to hospital for further assessment.

Thankfully, subsequent updates brought some relief. Zahra was discharged late on Saturday, while McNeil remained under observation before being expected to leave hospital on Sunday. Both riders appeared to have avoided serious injuries.

Half Yours also regained his feet following the fall and returned to his stable. The gelding sustained cuts and abrasions, and his connections continued to monitor his recovery.

Although these updates offered welcome news, they could not undo the loss of Ohope Wins.

QUESTIONS AFTER THE FALL

Racing Victoria confirmed that stewards would conduct an inquiry into the incident, with a separate veterinary review also planned.

The purpose is to establish the circumstances surrounding the fall and assess the relevant evidence. Until the inquiry reaches its findings, the precise cause should not be treated as settled.

The tragedy has also renewed discussion about racehorse welfare and the risks horses and jockeys face during high-level competition.

For many in the racing community, the immediate priority is to honour Ohope Wins while supporting the people affected by the incident.

A LEGACY BEYOND THE FINISH LINE

Race results often preserve a horse’s achievements in numbers, trophies and records. But Ohope Wins’s final tribute has reminded fans that the animals behind those achievements are also cherished companions to the people who care for them.

Her victories will remain part of racing history, but so will the words shared after her death: brave, kind and loved.

The Caulfield Cup will continue to be remembered as a major day in Australian racing. For those who knew Ohope Wins, however, this year’s event will forever carry a more painful memory — the loss of a remarkable mare whose story ended just metres from the finish.

🕊️ Rest in peace, Ohope Wins.
