THE HIDDEN CLUE — GRANDMOTHER’S REMAINS FOUND IN A DISUSED CATTLE DIP AFTER EIGHT MONTHS MISSING

A remote discovery, a car recovered from a river, and a family left desperate for answers. Investigators are now trying to piece together what happened to 73-year-old Yvonne Whear.

A quiet rural community in northern New South Wales has been left grieving after the remains of a missing grandmother were discovered in a disused livestock dip at Terragon, near Murwillumbah.

Yvonne Whear, 73, had been missing since February 2026. Her disappearance remained unresolved for months, until two trail-bike riders made a disturbing discovery on October 5.

The remains were found partially submerged in a tank once used to treat livestock for ticks and other parasites, down an overgrown track in an isolated area.

On October 13, police confirmed the remains belonged to Yvonne. Following a post-mortem examination, investigators classified her death as a homicide.

A DISCOVERY THAT RAISED MORE QUESTIONS

The location where Yvonne was found has become a key focus of the investigation. The livestock dip sits roughly 300 metres down an overgrown fire trail, away from the nearest road.

Police are appealing to anyone who visited the area during the months Yvonne was missing to come forward. Even seemingly minor details could help investigators reconstruct events and establish how she came to be there.

In September, Yvonne’s gold-coloured Ford Escape was recovered from the Rous River near Dulguigan Road.

The discovery added another troubling element to a disappearance that had already caused deep concern among her family and the wider community.

However, investigators have not publicly established a definitive sequence of events linking the vehicle’s recovery to the circumstances of her death.

Yvonne was a mother, grandmother of 10 and great-grandmother. Her family had spent months hoping to learn what happened to her.

Her daughter, Gillian Hallac, has appealed for anyone with information to consider the pain the family has endured and help bring them answers.

Police have also urged members of the public not to dismiss small details that might appear insignificant.

WHAT DOES “SOMEONE KNOWS” REALLY MEAN?

Police have publicly appealed to the community, saying they believe people may have information about Yvonne’s disappearance and death. That appeal does not establish that a particular local resident is responsible.

As of the latest reports, no suspect had been publicly identified. Investigators continue to examine the evidence and seek information from people who may have been in the area.

For Yvonne’s loved ones, the central question remains: what happened during the eight months between her disappearance and the discovery of her remains?
