A DAY OF RACING TURNS TO GRIEF — OHOPE WINS COULD NOT BE SAVED AFTER CAULFIELD CUP FALL

A DAY OF RACING TURNS TO GRIEF — OHOPE WINS COULD NOT BE SAVED AFTER CAULFIELD CUP FALL

She was a dual Oaks winner with a bright future ahead. But a devastating fall near the finish line turned one of Australia’s biggest race days into a moment of heartbreak.

The 150th Caulfield Cup in Melbourne, Australia, was overshadowed by a serious incident on Saturday, October 17, 2026, when New Zealand mare Ohope Wins fell in the closing stages of the 2,400-metre race.

With approximately 200 metres remaining, defending champion Half Yours fell after an apparent incident in the crowded field. Jockey Mark Zahra was dislodged, and Ohope Wins, ridden by Jye McNeil, was unable to avoid the fallen horse.

Within moments, both horses were on the track, and the atmosphere of a major racing event changed dramatically.

Veterinarians rushed to assess Ohope Wins, but the injuries she sustained were too severe. Racing Victoria later confirmed that the mare had been humanely euthanised by the on-course veterinary team.

The announcement brought profound sadness to her connections, including trainer Chris Waller, owner Yulong and the stable staff who had cared for her throughout her career.

In a heartfelt statement, her connections remembered her not simply as a champion, but as a horse with a special personality.

“She was brave. She was kind. She was full of character, but more importantly, she was loved.”

Ohope Wins had established herself as a talented staying mare, winning both the New Zealand Oaks and the Australian Oaks in 2026.

For those who worked with her every day, her value extended far beyond her results on the track. She was a much-loved member of the stable, and her loss has left a deep void among the people who knew and cared for her.

Her story has also prompted renewed discussion about the risks horses face during competitive racing.

 WHAT HAPPENED ON THE TRACK?

Half Yours, the winner of the 2025 Melbourne Cup, regained his feet after the fall and was assessed by veterinarians. He sustained cuts and abrasions, but early reports indicated that his injuries were not considered serious.

Both jockeys were conscious and alert when taken to hospital for further assessment. Mark Zahra was discharged later that Saturday evening, while Jye McNeil remained under observation and was expected to be discharged the following morning.

Racing Victoria stewards announced an inquiry into the incident, alongside a post-race veterinary review. At the time of reporting, the precise circumstances leading to the fall had not been conclusively established.

A TRAGEDY THAT WILL NOT BE FORGOTTEN

The Caulfield Cup is known for its history, fierce competition and memorable performances. This year’s running, however, will also be remembered for the loss of a much-loved mare.

As the racing community mourns Ohope Wins, questions remain about the circumstances of the incident and what the review may reveal.

For her connections, the memories of her achievements and the affection they held for her remain far more important than any result on a race card.

Rest in peace, Ohope Wins.
