A DAY OF YOUTH SOCCER TURNS TO TRAGEDY — COLE ADRIAN, 6, AND NICHOLAS SCHAFER, 35, KILLED AS TRUCK PLUNGES ONTO FIELD
A Saturday afternoon meant for children’s soccer and family time became a scene of heartbreak in Kansas. Two lives were lost, including a six-year-old boy, and multiple others were injured. Now, investigators are working to establish exactly what happened.
A youth soccer match in Wichita, Kansas, has ended in devastating tragedy after a pickup truck drove onto a playing field, striking children and adults gathered at the Stryker Sports Complex.
The two people who lost their lives were identified as six-year-old Cole Adrian and 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer. Both were from McPherson, Kansas, and were not related, according to police.
The crash happened at approximately 3:25 p.m. on Saturday, October 17, 2026, while families and young players were gathered at the sports complex.
TWO FAMILIES FACE AN UNIMAGINABLE LOSS
Cole was just six years old, an age when weekends should be filled with games, laughter and the excitement of growing up.
Nicholas, 35, was also among those who did not survive. As photographs of the victims began circulating in news reports, the scale of the loss became even more personal for the families and community members who knew them.
What began as an ordinary day around a children’s sporting event has left loved ones grieving and a wider community searching for answers.
CHILDREN AND ADULTS AMONG THE INJURED
According to the Wichita Police Department, a Chevrolet pickup driven by a 34-year-old woman had been parked near the soccer fields before it travelled onto one of the fields and struck multiple people.
Ten other people were reported injured, including children as young as five. Their ages ranged from five to 68, and authorities described their injuries as non-life-threatening.
Parents and other bystanders rushed to help before emergency crews arrived. Wichita Police Chief Joe Sullivan praised those who stepped forward to assist the injured during the chaotic moments after the crash.
Witnesses described scenes of panic as people tried to understand what was happening and help those around them.
INVESTIGATION CONTINUES
The driver was initially taken into custody but was released on Sunday without charges while the investigation continued.
Police said investigators were awaiting toxicology results and a mechanical examination of the pickup. More than 30 witnesses had reportedly been interviewed, and authorities appealed for anyone with relevant video footage to come forward.
At this stage, officials have not established whether the incident was accidental or deliberate. No charges had been filed in the latest reports, and the circumstances remain under investigation.
The Stryker Sports Complex cancelled its events until further notice as the community began to process the tragedy.
A COMMUNITY LEFT GRIEVING
Wichita Mayor Lily Wu expressed heartbreak over the incident, offering thoughts and prayers to the victims, their families and everyone affected.
For the families of Cole Adrian and Nicholas Schafer, the days ahead will be marked by an absence that words cannot easily explain. For the children and adults who witnessed the crash, the memory of that afternoon may also take time to process.
As investigators continue their work, the community is left mourning two lives lost during an event that should have been about teamwork, friendship and the joy of children playing soccer.
May Cole and Nicholas be remembered with compassion, and may their loved ones find support and strength during this painful time.
