A HEARTBREAKING DAY IN HORSE RACING — OHOPE WINS’ DEATH SPARKS FRESH QUESTIONS
The talented mare could not be saved after a devastating fall at the Caulfield Cup. Now, tributes are pouring in as the racing community waits for answers.
What should have been one of Australia’s biggest days of racing ended in heartbreak on October 17, when Ohope Wins suffered fatal injuries during the Caulfield Cup.
The New Zealand-bred mare was caught up in a fall involving Half Yours in the home straight. Jockey Jye McNeil was unable to avoid the fallen horse, and Ohope Wins also went down.
Veterinarians attended her at the track, but the injuries were too severe to save her. Racing Victoria later confirmed that she had been humanely euthanized.
McNeil and Half Yours’ jockey, Mark Zahra, were taken to hospital for observation. Early reports indicated that both riders had escaped serious injury.
A MARE REMEMBERED FOR MORE THAN HER WINS
Ohope Wins had built an impressive record, winning both the New Zealand Oaks and the Australian Oaks. But for the people who trained and cared for her, her legacy went beyond the results on the track.
Former trainers Andrew Scott and Lance O’Sullivan remembered her as talented, willing to learn and exceptionally kind. Her connections in New Zealand and Australia have been left grieving the loss of a horse who had become a much-loved member of their racing teams.
Her death has prompted renewed discussion about horse welfare and the risks involved in competitive racing.
AN INQUIRY IS EXPECTED
Racing Victoria stewards have said they will investigate the racing incident, with a further veterinary review also planned. The circumstances surrounding the fall will need to be examined before conclusions can be drawn.
For now, the racing community is mourning Ohope Wins while awaiting more information about how the incident unfolded.
Behind every racehorse is a team of people who invest years of care, work and hope. For Ohope Wins’ connections, the loss is deeply personal—and her achievements will remain part of her story.
Rest in peace, Ohope Wins.
