“THE OCEAN WAS HER HAPPY PLACE” — BELOVED 65-YEAR-OLD SWIMMER KILLED IN HORRIFIC SHARK ATTACK OFF SOUTH AFRICA
She had spent years finding joy, freedom and friendship in the ocean. But during what should have been another peaceful morning swim, Janine Lochrenberg was suddenly attacked by a shark. Despite desperate efforts by fellow swimmers to save her, the much-loved 65-year-old could not be rescued. Now, her heartbroken swimming community is paying tribute to a woman they say will never be forgotten.
A beloved open-water swimmer has died following a fatal shark attack off the coast of South Africa, leaving her family, partner and friends devastated.
Janine Lochrenberg, 65, was swimming with a group at Orient Beach in KuGompo City, formerly known as East London, on the morning of Tuesday, October 20, 2026, when the attack occurred.
The recently retired nuclear radiographer and talented musician was an experienced swimmer who loved spending time in the sea.
But around 7am local time, the peaceful morning took a horrifying turn when Janine signalled that she was in trouble.
Witnesses quickly realised she had been attacked by a shark. She suffered severe injuries to her thigh and upper arm, and fellow swimmers rushed to bring her back to shore.
Despite their desperate efforts to help her, Janine was pronounced dead at the scene.
A DESPERATE FIGHT TO SAVE HER
The moments following the attack were filled with panic and heartbreak.
Other swimmers immediately responded when they realised Janine was seriously injured. Those in the water worked to support her and bring her towards the beach, while people on shore prepared to help.
Among those who assisted were experienced swimmers and a trained medic, who attempted to save her life.
But the injuries were too severe, and Janine could not be saved.
Her death has left those who witnessed the incident deeply shaken. For the people who had shared countless swims with her, the loss of a friend in the very place where she felt happiest is almost impossible to comprehend.
Authorities opened an inquest into her death. The shark species responsible was not immediately confirmed in initial reports.
“THE OCEAN WAS JANINE’S HAPPY PLACE”
Following the tragedy, the East London Open Water Swimming community shared an emotional tribute to their friend.
They described Janine as a cherished member of their swimming family, remembering her beautiful smile, gentle kindness and the quiet warmth she brought to those around her.
“She was never one to seek the spotlight, preferring to quietly go about doing what she loved most — swimming in the ocean,” the group said.
“The ocean was Janine’s happy place. It was where she found her joy, and where so many of us were fortunate enough to share special moments with her.”
The tribute continued with a heartbreaking message:
“Rest peacefully, Janine. You will be so very missed, and you will always be part of our ocean family.”
Friends also remembered her as an intelligent, talented and genuinely kind person who listened carefully to others and made people feel valued.
For many, she was much more than a fellow swimmer. She was a trusted friend who had shared adventures, laughter and unforgettable moments in the water.
A LIFE FILLED WITH MUSIC, ADVENTURE AND LOVE
Away from the ocean, Janine had built a life filled with other passions.
She had recently retired from her career as a nuclear radiographer and was also known for her musical talents.
She was a valued member of the local music community and had a deep appreciation for the outdoors.
Her friends recalled swimming together at beaches, rivers and dams, sharing adventures that had strengthened their friendships over the years.
Janine’s partner, Barbara Briceland, was among those left grieving the devastating loss.
The couple had shared a love of swimming and adventure, creating memories together in the places that brought them happiness.
Now, those memories have become even more precious to the people who loved her.
BEACHES CLOSED AFTER THE FATAL ATTACK
Following the incident, authorities closed both Orient Beach and nearby Eastern Beach as a precaution while safety assessments were carried out.
Police confirmed that an investigation into the circumstances of Janine’s death was underway.
Fatal shark attacks are uncommon, even in South Africa, a country known for its extensive coastline and diverse marine life.
The tragedy has once again highlighted the risks that can accompany open-water swimming, even for experienced swimmers who know and love the sea.
However, fellow swimmer Mike Loewe, who was involved in the rescue effort, emphasised the close bond within the swimming community and the importance of respecting the ocean rather than blaming the animal involved.
For those who knew Janine, the immediate priority is mourning a friend whose life ended in the place she loved most.
“YOU WILL ALWAYS BE PART OF OUR OCEAN FAMILY”
Janine’s death is a devastating reminder of how quickly an ordinary day can become a tragedy.
She entered the water to do something that brought her happiness, surrounded by people who shared her passion. Within moments, her friends were fighting to save her life.
No words can fully express the pain of losing someone so loved, particularly in such sudden and traumatic circumstances.
Her family, partner and friends now face the difficult task of carrying on without her, holding on to the memories of the woman they knew — her kindness, her intelligence, her smile and her love for the ocean.
The sea will continue to be a place of joy for many, but for Janine’s loved ones, it will forever be connected to a morning they will never forget.
Rest in peace, Janine Lochrenberg. May your family, Barbara and everyone who loved you find comfort in the memories you shared. You may be gone, but you will always be part of your ocean family.
