Malaysia Teen Arrested After Allegedly Livestreaming Axe Attack on Teacher — Police Investigate Why
A disturbing classroom attack in Malaysia has raised fresh concerns about school safety after a 16-year-old student allegedly livestreamed an assault on his teacher.
The incident occurred on October 21 at an international school in Kuching, Sarawak. Police said they received an emergency call at approximately 8:03 a.m. reporting that a student had brought fireworks to school and injured a female teacher with an axe.
CCTV footage reportedly shows the teenager entering a classroom and striking the teacher before leaving. He later returns through another entrance as students attempt to flee. The teacher appears to intervene, and two male students help subdue the teenager and take the weapon away.
Investigators also confirmed that footage connected to the incident had been livestreamed. Reports said the student used a mobile phone attached to his forehead to record his movements.
The teacher sustained cuts to her hand. The school later said she was recovering well and had not suffered critical injuries. No other injuries were reported among the students in the affected classroom.
Police arrested the teenager and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack. Authorities have urged the public not to speculate while investigators gather evidence and interview witnesses.
The incident has also prompted scrutiny of social media platforms. Malaysia’s communications minister said the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission was investigating how the livestream appeared on Facebook and whether the platform failed to detect or block it promptly.
Separately, a local minister urged the public not to shame or label the teenager before the circumstances are understood. Reports have described online posts attributed to the student expressing feelings of isolation, but authorities have not established that these posts explain the attack.
The case has renewed difficult questions about student well-being, school security and the spread of violent content online. Educators and families are also facing the challenge of helping students process an incident that unfolded in their school community.
For now, police continue to investigate what led to the alleged assault. The teacher is recovering, and the school says it has strengthened security measures and is arranging support for those affected.
The investigation may clarify what happened that morning—but it also leaves a broader question for schools and online platforms: how can warning signs be addressed while keeping students and teachers safe?
