OVERCOMING CYBERBULLYING: INDIRA DE ROOIJ’S JOURNEY OF RESILIENCE AND ACCEPTANCE
At the age of sixteen, Indira de Rooij discovered that a complete stranger had taken her photograph and turned it into a cruel online joke. The malicious post quickly gained around ten thousand likes, spreading across social media platforms. While thousands of users simply clicked, laughed, and moved on, Indira was left to face the deep emotional impact of their online actions.

Indira, a dedicated nurse from Almere in the Netherlands, was born with a rare lymphatic malformation that affected her chin, tongue, and throat. Due to severe breathing difficulties, she required a tracheotomy at a young age and eventually underwent more than thirty major surgeries. Doctors were forced to pause further procedures during her childhood because additional operations carried a high risk of facial paralysis, though she later received further treatment as an adult. Beyond the physical hardships and hospital visits, she frequently endured public stares, laughter, and people taking unauthorized photographs. Following the viral online bullying incident, she sought professional therapy to process the psychological trauma.

When she spoke publicly about her experiences in September 2024 at twenty-five years old, Indira shared that she felt happier than ever. Yet she offered an honest reflection on self-acceptance, admitting that she was still not completely comfortable with her physical appearance every single day. Her story shows that a person can thrive professionally, build confidence, and love their life while still experiencing moments of insecurity. Today, as a nurse, Indira inspires others with visible differences to pursue their career ambitions fearlessly, proving that true strength lies in authentic growth rather than perfection.
