TRAVEL INFLUENCER, 24, DIES AFTER RAIN-SWOLLEN RIVER SWEEPS AWAY TRUCK DURING NICARAGUA TRIP
French travel creator Emma Marie Laurent was among three young women who died after the vehicle they were travelling in was caught in a powerful river current. The driver survived as authorities investigated the tragedy.
A young travel influencer who spent her life exploring the world has died during a trip to Nicaragua after a swollen river swept away the pickup truck she was travelling in.
Emma Marie Laurent, 24, from France, died alongside Noë Lina Luscher, 20, a Swiss tourist, and Karen Nahomi López Montano, 19, from Nicaragua. The tragedy happened at around 1 a.m. on October 9, in the community of El Manzano in the northwestern department of Chinandega.
The three women were passengers in a Toyota pickup attempting to cross the Nahualapa River after recent rainfall had strengthened the current. The vehicle was swept away and overturned. The driver, identified in reports as Mexican national Martin Gerardo García Girón, survived. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A DREAM OF EXPLORING THE WORLD
Laurent had built an online community by sharing travel adventures, life on the road and moments of beauty she encountered along the way. She had approximately 43,000 Instagram followers and described herself as “your barefoot bff.”
She was visiting Nicaragua to see family, according to reports, when the trip ended in tragedy.
Her last apparent social media update was shared on October 2 and featured scenes from Portugal. The post included a reflection on the people who notice and appreciate the world around them — from changing colours in the evening sky to rain falling against a window.
The words have taken on a heartbreaking significance for followers who have since returned to her page to leave tributes and condolences.
HOW THE RIVER BECAME SO DANGEROUS
The Nahualapa River is not always considered dangerous, but heavy rain can quickly change its depth and strength. Reports indicate that the current had intensified before the group attempted to cross during the early hours of the morning.
Nicaragua’s co-president, Rosario Murillo, expressed condolences to the families and warned that rivers can appear calm before suddenly becoming hazardous. She urged people to remain vigilant during periods of heavy rain.
The precise circumstances of the crossing remain under investigation. Authorities have not publicly established all the factors that led to the vehicle being swept away.
THREE YOUNG LIVES REMEMBERED
The deaths of Laurent, Luscher and López Montano have brought grief to families and communities across three countries.
For those who followed Laurent online, her posts offered glimpses of a life shaped by curiosity, travel and a desire to find beauty in everyday moments. Now, the same photographs and reflections have become a place for people to remember her.
Her final message about appreciating the world around us serves as a poignant reminder of the spirit she shared with her followers.
