PRIEST DIES AFTER MASSIVE CRUCIFIX FALLS ON HIM DURING LIVESTREAMED SERVICE IN ECUADOR
Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, 53, was leading Mass at a church in Guayaquil when a large wooden crucifix suddenly fell from the wall behind him. Worshippers rushed to help as the shocking moment unfolded on a livestream.
A moment of prayer turned into an unimaginable tragedy when a Catholic priest in Ecuador was fatally struck by a falling crucifix during a livestreamed Mass.
Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, 53, was celebrating the service at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, also known as Perpetuo Socorro, in Guayaquil on the evening of October 17, 2026.
He was standing behind the altar, facing the congregation, when the large wooden crucifix mounted behind him suddenly tipped forward and fell.
The priest did not appear to notice it coming. The cross struck him from behind, knocking him out of view.
The livestream captured the congregation’s cries of alarm as people hurried toward the altar to help. Voices could be heard calling for an ambulance while the service descended into confusion.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil later confirmed that Father Sánchez had died.
A CONGREGATION LEFT IN SHOCK
Those attending the service were suddenly confronted with an emergency no one could have anticipated.
As the crucifix fell, worshippers rushed forward in an attempt to assist the priest. The livestream continued to capture the congregation’s distress before the footage was taken down by the parish.
The cause of the crucifix’s fall has not been established publicly. Church officials and authorities had not provided a confirmed explanation for why the structure came loose.
The incident quickly drew attention beyond Ecuador as footage from the service circulated online.
REMEMBERING FATHER PATRICIO
Father Sánchez was a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, a Catholic religious order also known as the Redemptorists.
He had served as parish priest at Perpetuo Socorro Church in Guayaquil. Before that, he had also served at San Lorenzo de Vinces Parish, where former parishioners remembered his dedication and pastoral care.
The Archdiocese of Guayaquil announced his passing in a message of mourning, offering prayers and condolences to his family, friends and fellow members of the Redemptorist community.
A memorial Eucharist was celebrated at the church on October 18, bringing together people who wished to honour his life and ministry.
HIS FINAL MESSAGE DURING MASS
In a deeply moving detail, Father Sánchez had been speaking about the importance of faith, family and how people choose to spend their time shortly before the accident.
According to a transcript reported by the local newspaper El Universo, he reminded the congregation that life is temporary and encouraged them to place God, loved ones and meaningful relationships above everyday distractions.
He told those gathered that the time dedicated to God, family and one another was time spent in the best possible way.
Those words have taken on a particularly poignant meaning for parishioners now mourning his sudden passing.
QUESTIONS REMAIN ABOUT THE FALL
The tragedy has raised questions about how the heavy crucifix became detached or tipped forward during the service.
As of the latest reports, no official explanation for the accident had been released. It would therefore be premature to draw conclusions about what caused the structure to fall.
For the people who knew Father Sánchez, however, the immediate focus has been on remembering the priest and supporting those closest to him.
A congregation had gathered for an evening of worship. Instead, they witnessed a tragedy that no one could have imagined. Father Patricio Sánchez Molinari will be remembered by his community for his service, faith and the message he shared in his final moments.
May he rest in peace. 🕊️
