TRAVEL INFLUENCER EMMA LAURENT, 24, DIES IN NICARAGUA RIVER TRAGEDY — SURVIVING FRIEND REVEALS TERRIFYING FINAL MOMENTS

Emma Marie Laurent was traveling with friends when their vehicle was swept away by a sudden surge of water. Nearly three weeks later, her close friend Marine Despouys has shared a heartbreaking account of the night that changed their lives forever.

A 24-year-old French travel influencer who spent years documenting adventures around the world has died after a pickup truck carrying her and several companions was swept away by a powerful river current in Nicaragua.

Emma Marie Laurent was one of three young women who lost their lives in the incident on October 9. The other victims were Noë Lina Luscher, 20, from Switzerland, and Karen Nahomi López Montano, 19, from Nicaragua.

The tragedy happened near El Manzano, in the department of Chinandega, when the group was returning to their accommodation during heavy rain and attempted to cross the Nahualapa River.

Initial reports suggested that only the driver survived. However, a new account published by French newspaper Le Parisien on October 29 revealed that six people were inside the vehicle — and that another passenger, French travel creator Marine Despouys, survived.

Marine, who had traveled with Emma for around two years, has now described the terrifying moments when the vehicle was overwhelmed by the water.

“THE WATER REACHED THE WINDOWS IN A SECOND”

According to Marine’s account, she and Emma had been working with a surf hotel in Nicaragua, spending their days surfing and exploring the area.

On the night of October 8, the group had been returning from a salsa class in heavy tropical rain.

They were only around five minutes from their destination when the vehicle reached a flooded section of the road.

The driver, identified in reports as Martin Gerardo García Girón, reportedly got out to check the water depth. After assessing the conditions, he returned to the vehicle and attempted to cross.

But as the Toyota entered the water, a powerful surge suddenly came from the side.

Marine recalled that the water reached the vehicle’s windows within seconds.

She was sitting in the back with Emma, Noë and Karen. The four women were quickly overwhelmed as water entered the vehicle, and the windows became impossible to open.

As the vehicle began sinking, Marine remembered Emma remaining calm and encouraging everyone to take as much air as they could.

She later described that moment as one of the most frightening experiences of her life.

A DESPERATE STRUGGLE TO ESCAPE

The vehicle was carried away by the current and reportedly rolled several times.

Marine described struggling to find a way out as the water continued rising inside the truck.

She eventually managed to escape through the front-left area of the vehicle before being swept along by the current.

A tree trunk eventually stopped her movement, allowing her to reach the surface and breathe again.

Once she could call for help, she began shouting the names of Emma and Guillaume — Emma’s younger brother, who had been sitting in the front of the vehicle.

She eventually heard two men responding.

Local residents came to help and located the overturned vehicle, which was still partly submerged.

MARINE TRIED TO SAVE HER FRIEND

When the women were brought back, Marine desperately tried to revive Emma.

But her friend was unresponsive.

In her emotional account, Marine described crying and calling out for Emma, unable to accept what had happened.

She said she held her friend in her arms for more than 30 minutes.

Marine later returned to the hotel and used a computer to contact Emma’s parents with the devastating news.

She remembered Emma as the person who had remained calm and encouraged the others to breathe during the terrifying moments inside the vehicle.

Marine said she would always be grateful for that final act of courage.

WHO WERE THE THREE WOMEN?

Emma Marie Laurent had built an online following of approximately 43,000 people through her travel content.

She described herself as “your barefoot BFF” and often shared a lifestyle of moving between destinations with little more than her belongings and two suitcases.

Her travels took her across Europe, Africa and the Caribbean, and she regularly documented van life, outdoor adventures and encounters with people along the way.

Noë Lina Luscher, 20, was a Swiss traveler who had also been exploring the region.

Karen Nahomi López Montano, 19, was Nicaraguan and worked at a hotel in the area, according to local reporting.

The three young women came from different backgrounds, but their lives were brought together during the trip to Nicaragua.

HER FINAL MESSAGE FROM PORTUGAL

One of the details that has deeply affected Emma’s followers is a reflective message she shared shortly before the accident.

On October 2, about a week before her death, she posted a video from Portugal alongside a message written in French.

“I think the most beautiful people, inside and out, are those who know how to admire the world around them,” she wrote.

The post has since become a place where followers are leaving messages of remembrance and condolences.

For many people who followed her travels, it was a reminder of the curiosity and appreciation for the world that defined her online presence.

AUTHORITIES WARN OF THE DANGERS OF RISING RIVERS

Nicaragua’s co-president Rosario Murillo addressed the tragedy and warned that rivers can become extremely dangerous during periods of heavy rainfall.

She cautioned that a river that appears calm can suddenly become hazardous when the current rises.

Local authorities have been investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. Reports have not established whether the driver will face any charges.

The tragedy has also renewed attention to the risks of attempting to cross flooded roads and waterways during the rainy season.

For Emma’s family, friends and the thousands of people who followed her adventures, the loss is profound.

A young woman who spent her life exploring the world has left behind a community of people remembering her through the places she visited, the stories she shared and the friendships she built along the way.
