The Secret Behind the Cattle Baron’s Unexpected Smile

The Secret Behind the Cattle Baron’s Unexpected Smile
For the first time in seven years, Garrett Thorne laughed.
It was only a small, unexpected sound, but it shocked everyone in the study.
The ranch hand stared.
The butler nearly dropped his tray.
And Sarah Miller stood motionless, unable to believe what she had heard.
Garrett picked up the framed photograph beside his ledger.
It showed a smiling woman holding a little boy with mischievous eyes.
“My son used to do that,” he whispered.
Sarah remained silent.
“He would copy my expressions whenever I scolded him. Said I looked like an angry old bear.”
Penny tilted her head.
“Well, you do look like a bear.”
Garrett’s mouth twitched.
“A bear?”
“A grumpy one.”
This time, he laughed openly.
But the laughter faded when he looked at the photograph again.
“My boy was four when I lost him,” Garrett said quietly. “His mother too.”
Sarah’s expression softened.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Thorne. I lost my husband last year. Some mornings, getting out of bed feels impossible.”
For the first time, Garrett looked at her as something more than another applicant.
He noticed her cracked hands, exhausted eyes, and the way she kept Penny close to protect her from disappointment.
“Where are you staying?” he asked.
Sarah hesitated.
“We have until tomorrow to leave our room.”
Garrett looked toward the snow falling beyond his window.
Then he rang the bell.
“Prepare the east bedroom. Have the kitchen send up supper.”
Sarah blinked.
“Sir?”
“You start tomorrow morning. The child stays.”
Tears filled Sarah’s eyes.
But before she could thank him, Penny climbed onto the enormous chair opposite Garrett.
She folded her arms again.
“Does that mean you’re not grumpy anymore?”
Garrett shook his head.
“I’m afraid I’m still very grumpy.”
Penny considered this seriously.
“That’s okay. Mama says everybody needs a hug.”
Then she climbed down and wrapped her tiny arms around his leg.
Garrett froze.
For seven years, no one had dared embrace him.
And as Sarah watched his eyes fill with tears, she realized something extraordinary.
They had arrived hoping Garrett Thorne would save them.
But perhaps they had come into his life just in time to save him, too.
