PART 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE MOUNTAIN

PART 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE MOUNTAIN
A powerful pair of arms caught Clara just before the falling beam crushed her.
Gideon had returned.
He carried her away from the collapsing porch and placed her safely beside his black stallion. His face was pale with anger and fear.
“You could have been killed!” he shouted.
Clara stared at him, trembling. “Why did you come back?”
“Because I couldn’t leave knowing you were alone out here.”
That night, Gideon refused to leave her in the damaged house. He brought her to his mountain ranch, where a warm fire, a comfortable bed, and a full pantry awaited her.
But Clara soon discovered something strange. Gideon had prepared an entire room for a child, even though he had never been married.
When she asked about it, his expression changed.
He finally confessed that years earlier, he had promised his dying sister he would build a home where children would always feel safe and loved. He had spent years searching for someone who understood hardship and would never turn away a person in need.
“I don’t want a woman who owes me gratitude,” he told her. “I want a wife who chooses me freely.”
Clara began to see the loneliness hidden beneath his enormous strength. Gideon wasn’t searching for someone to give him an heir. He was searching for someone with whom he could share the life he had built.
Days passed, and their friendship slowly became something deeper.
One snowy evening, Clara found herself laughing beside the fireplace for the first time in years. Gideon watched her quietly.
“Perhaps your heart isn’t as buried as you thought,” he whispered.
Clara touched Jonah’s ring, then looked into Gideon’s eyes.
“Perhaps love doesn’t mean forgetting.”
She finally understood that accepting happiness wasn’t a betrayal of her past.
But just as she began considering his proposal, a stranger arrived at the ranch carrying an old letter addressed to Gideon.
Its contents revealed a shocking truth about Jonah’s final days—and a secret that could destroy everything Clara thought she knew.
Gideon looked at the letter, then at Clara.
“Before you decide to marry me,” he said, “there’s something about your husband you deserve to know.”
