PART 2: THE SECRET BEHIND HER HANDS

PART 2: THE SECRET BEHIND HER HANDS
By midday, the storm had weakened, but Ethan remained unconscious. Clara stayed beside him, changing his dressings and carefully monitoring his fever.
Dr. Hargrove refused to accept what he had witnessed.
“You were lucky,” he insisted. “A woman with homemade remedies shouldn’t attempt surgery.”
Clara finally faced him.
“Then explain why your stitches nearly killed him.”
Nobody spoke.
That evening, Ethan opened his eyes. His first sight was Clara sleeping in a chair beside the fireplace, her exhausted hands resting in her lap.
“Who is she?” he whispered.
Caleb smiled. “The woman who brought you back from the dead.”
Over the following days, Ethan slowly recovered. He learned that Clara had once studied medicine under a respected surgeon in Boston. But after her mentor died, she was blamed for a wealthy patient’s death, despite having tried desperately to save him. The scandal destroyed her reputation and forced her west.
Willow Creek had never known her story. They had only seen a lonely woman they enjoyed mocking.
Ethan listened silently.
“Why didn’t you tell anyone?” he asked.
“Because people had already decided who I was. I stopped wasting my breath trying to change their minds.”
Ethan reached for her hand.
“Then let me be the first man in this town to believe you.”
Weeks later, he walked into Willow Creek beside Clara. The same people who had laughed at her now lowered their eyes.
But Clara wasn’t seeking their approval anymore.
She had saved the most feared mountain cowboy in the territory, and in doing so, discovered something she had nearly forgotten: her knowledge still mattered, her hands could still heal, and her past did not have to determine her future.
And Ethan Blackwood intended to make certain the whole town remembered the woman who had saved his life.
