PART 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE MOUNTAIN

PART 2: THE SECRET BEHIND THE MOUNTAIN
By midnight, Ethan finally brought Abigail to his cabin. He wrapped her in a warm blanket, prepared supper, and carefully examined her injured ankle.

“You could have left me back there,” Abigail whispered.

Ethan looked up.

“I married you. That means I won’t abandon you.”

Those words stayed with her.

Over the following days, Abigail discovered that Ethan was nothing like the cruel man Silver Creek had described. He worked tirelessly, treated his horses gently, and never once mocked her appearance.

Meanwhile, Richard Collins grew increasingly impatient.

He had not arranged the marriage out of kindness. He wanted Ethan’s mountain because a railroad company planned to purchase the land for an enormous sum. Once Ethan lost his property, Collins intended to control the entire deal.

But there was one problem.

Ethan had discovered something unusual in his grandfather’s old documents: a hidden agreement proving that the railroad’s proposed route crossed land belonging to several families, not the mayor.

Collins would lose everything if the truth emerged.

One morning, Abigail overheard two riders discussing a plan to force Ethan off the mountain. They intended to burn his logging sheds and make it appear that he had started the fire himself.

Terrified, she warned her husband.

Ethan immediately understood the danger.

That evening, three armed men approached the cabin.

But they had underestimated Abigail.

While Ethan confronted the intruders outside, she retrieved the old documents and rode toward Silver Creek to find the sheriff.

By sunrise, the truth had spread throughout town.

Richard Collins was arrested, and the railroad scheme collapsed.

Weeks later, Ethan stood beside Abigail on the mountain overlooking the endless pine forests.

“You saved my land,” he told her.

Abigail smiled sadly. “I was only trying to protect my husband.”

Ethan gently took her hands.

“Then let me tell you something. The day I married you, I thought I was saving my home. I never expected you would become my home.”

Abigail’s eyes filled with tears.

Their marriage had begun as a bargain, but it had become something neither had dared to imagine.

And when Silver Creek finally welcomed them home, nobody laughed at the mountain man’s wife again.
