Mother, 48, and 20-Year-Old Daughter Found Dead After Suspected Grizzly Bear Attack During Walk in Canada: Family Shares Heartbreaking Details
A mother and her youngest daughter who shared a love of hiking and the outdoors have been found dead following a suspected grizzly bear attack in British Columbia, Canada.
Jennifer “Jenny” Balcarras, 48, and her daughter, Selah Reed, 20, were reported missing after they failed to return from a walk near Bella Coola over the weekend.
Their disappearance prompted a search involving the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and British Columbia’s Conservation Officer Service. The search ended in tragedy when Jenny’s remains were discovered on Monday, November 2, and Selah was found the following afternoon, November 3, in the Snooka West Trail area.
Authorities believe a bear attack may have been responsible for their deaths. Investigators have not yet confirmed exactly what happened or whether more than one grizzly bear was involved.
A Walk That Never Ended
According to family members, Jenny and Selah were familiar with the trail and had gone out for what was expected to be an ordinary walk.
The trail was not considered particularly remote. Jenny’s brother, Josh Balcarras, told CBC News that it was a familiar place for the pair and described their outing as “just a casual walk.”
The family became increasingly concerned when they could not reach the two women. What initially seemed like a delay soon turned into a desperate search.
“It’s surreal. It doesn’t seem real. It feels like a dream,” Josh said, describing the moment the family realized something was seriously wrong.
The discovery of the two bodies brought the search to a devastating conclusion.
A Mother Remembered for Her Kindness and Creativity
Jenny was an art therapist who had recently moved to Bella Coola to pursue a new career and begin another chapter in her life.
She was a mother of four and a grandmother. Her family remembered her as a deeply caring person with a passion for art, music, books and the outdoors.
Her brother Matthew Balcarras spoke about her strength and the compassion she brought to her work.
Jenny had spent years supporting people through art therapy, including children and older adults. She had also worked in coastal communities in British Columbia and Alaska before moving to Bella Coola.
The Central Coast Teachers’ Association remembered her as a dedicated school counsellor who devoted countless hours to connecting with students and supporting their well-being.
For her family, she was not only a talented artist and professional but also someone who played a central role in their lives.
Selah Was Her Youngest Child
Selah, 20, was Jenny’s youngest daughter.
Her family described her as a gentle, sweet and quiet young woman who loved ballet, art and hiking. She was also studying online through Athabasca University and had worked as an educational assistant.
Those who knew the pair said they shared many of the same interests and were especially close.
Josh described them as “two peas in a pod,” explaining that whenever Jenny went hiking, Selah was usually right beside her.
The mother and daughter had shared many ordinary moments outdoors. Now, the trail they knew so well has become the place associated with an unimaginable family loss.
Authorities Investigating Whether Multiple Bears Were Involved
British Columbia’s Conservation Officer Service confirmed that evidence suggested a bear may have been involved in the incident.
Inspector Jeff Tyre said investigators had not yet determined whether one or multiple bears were responsible.
Officers are continuing to investigate and attempting to locate and capture any bears potentially involved. Authorities have urged members of the public to stay away from the Snooka West Trail area while the investigation continues.
Any bear captured will be assessed. If it is determined to have been involved in the attack, officials say it will be dealt with under provincial human-wildlife conflict response guidelines to protect public safety.
The tragedy has also renewed concern in Bella Coola, a community where grizzly bears are part of the surrounding wilderness.
It comes nearly a year after another serious bear attack in the same area injured 11 people, including schoolchildren and teachers. The bear involved in that earlier incident was never captured.
A Family Facing an Unimaginable Loss
A fundraiser organized by relatives has been established to help the family cover funeral arrangements and other unexpected expenses.
The loss of Jenny and Selah has left their loved ones grieving two lives taken in circumstances that remain under investigation.
Jenny had recently moved to Bella Coola to build a new future. Selah was only 20 and had so much of her life still ahead of her.
They had gone out together for a familiar walk. They never made it home.
Now, their family is left with memories of a mother and daughter whose close bond, shared interests and love of the outdoors will not be forgotten.
