HEARTBREAKING UPDATE: JESÚS DE MIGUEL, 30, DIES AFTER HORRIFIC ON-FIELD COLLISION — PRELIMINARY AUTOPSY REVEALS CAUSE OF DEATH
The football world has been left devastated after Spanish striker Jesús de Miguel died at just 30 years old, following a horrific collision during a second-division match. Now, a preliminary autopsy has revealed the reported cause of his death, as authorities continue examining the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
De Miguel, who played for CD Tenerife, was involved in a heavy collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a match on Monday, November 2, 2026. What began as an ordinary football contest ended in an emergency that shocked players, supporters and the wider sporting community.
A COLLISION THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
The incident happened during stoppage time at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium in Tenerife, Spain.
With the score tied at 2–2, a long ball was played forward. De Miguel ran toward it, while Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his penalty area in an attempt to reach the ball.
The two players collided heavily near the halfway line, with Owono’s knee striking De Miguel in the chest.
The Tenerife forward was left unconscious on the pitch. Players from both teams immediately called for medical assistance as the seriousness of the situation became clear.
The referee showed Owono a straight red card for the challenge, and the match was eventually abandoned.
Medical personnel treated De Miguel on the field before he was carried away on a stretcher. Reports later indicated that he suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest and that medical staff managed to restore his pulse during the journey to hospital.
He was taken to the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria, where he remained in critical condition.
HIS CONDITION DETERIORATED OVERNIGHT
In the hours following the collision, CD Tenerife provided updates on the player’s condition.
Although the club initially described him as stable, De Miguel remained unconscious. His neurological condition later worsened, leaving his family, teammates and supporters desperately hoping for a recovery.
On Tuesday morning, November 3, the club confirmed the heartbreaking news.
Jesús de Miguel had passed away at approximately 8 a.m. local time. He was just 30 years old.
In its emotional statement, CD Tenerife described itself as devastated and expressed its deepest condolences to his family, loved ones and everyone connected with the club.
The announcement sent shockwaves through Spanish football, with tributes quickly arriving from clubs, players and supporters across Europe.
PRELIMINARY AUTOPSY REVEALS THE CAUSE OF DEATH
A new development emerged on November 5, when Spanish media reported findings from the preliminary autopsy.
According to the Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the preliminary report identified accidental chest trauma as the cause of De Miguel’s death.
The findings reportedly indicated that the chest injury was consistent with the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision.
However, the investigation is not yet complete. Additional medical examinations, toxicology results and information from a CT scan are still expected to be reviewed by the court.
Authorities are also examining the medical treatment De Miguel received after collapsing and the circumstances of his transfer to hospital.
Spanish police opened judicial proceedings because deaths considered to have resulted from non-natural causes are subject to investigation under Spanish law.
The referee’s report also described Owono’s challenge as involving excessive force while the two players were competing for the ball.
Importantly, the investigation does not mean that criminal responsibility has been established. The circumstances remain under judicial review.
THE GOALKEEPER SPEAKS OUT AS THE TRAGEDY TAKES ITS TOLL
The incident has also had a profound emotional impact on Jesús Owono.
The 25-year-old goalkeeper, who represents Equatorial Guinea internationally, expressed his grief in a statement released after De Miguel’s passing.
“These are the most difficult days of my life,” Owono said, explaining that he was struggling to process what had happened.
He added that his thoughts were with Jesús and the pain surrounding his passing.
Owono subsequently deactivated his Instagram account after receiving abusive messages online, including comments accusing him of being responsible for the tragedy.
The Equatorial Guinean Football Federation publicly expressed support for the goalkeeper, saying he was experiencing profound sorrow and grief.
On November 5, Reuters reported that Owono had been left out of Equatorial Guinea’s squad for its upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Zimbabwe, scheduled for November 12 and November 16.
The decision came as the emotional consequences of the incident continued to affect everyone involved.
