MK’s Brave Beginning A 22-Month-Old Girl’s Journey of Love Strength and Difficult Choices

A family in the Philippines is sharing the story of their 22-month-old daughter, known as MK, whose life has been shaped by a rare and complex neurological condition since birth. Diagnosed with hydrocephalus and a frontal meningoencephalocele, MK has required specialized medical care from her earliest days.

Hydrocephalus is a condition in which fluid builds up within the brain, while a meningoencephalocele involves brain tissue and protective membranes extending through an opening in the skull. According to her medical team, these conditions presented significant challenges and required careful evaluation before any intervention could be considered.
In 2019, MK underwent a procedure to place a ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt to help drain excess fluid from her brain. The surgery was intended to reduce pressure and support her comfort and development. Following this procedure, her neurosurgeon reviewed the possibility of additional operations aimed at reducing the size of her head.

However, doctors advised that further surgery would carry extremely high risks. Medical specialists explained to the family that additional intervention could result in severe neurological complications and might place MK’s life in danger. After consulting with multiple professionals, including another neurosurgeon who shared the same assessment, the family faced a difficult decision.
Ultimately, MK’s parents chose not to pursue further surgical procedures. They decided that the safest and most compassionate option was to focus on providing care at home, prioritizing comfort, stability, and emotional well-being.

“Our goal is to give her the best life possible in the way that is safest for her,” a family member shared. “She may face challenges, but she is surrounded by love every single day.”
Since returning home, MK has been cared for by her family, who say she responds positively to familiar voices, gentle routines, and constant attention. They describe her as a child who is deeply cherished and supported by those around her.

Medical professionals note that cases like MK’s highlight the importance of individualized care plans and family-centered decision-making. While advanced procedures can offer benefits in some situations, they also carry risks that must be carefully weighed against quality of life.
MK’s story reflects a choice made not out of fear, but out of careful consideration and love. As her family continues to care for her at home, they hope her journey will help others understand that medical decisions are not always about doing more, but about doing what is best for the child and the family as a whole.
