Justice for James Self

Security footage shown in court captured Polly Murphy leaving a hotel room with her suitcase. Hours later, emergency services were called to that same room.
Inside, James Self had suffered severe injuries following what prosecutors described as a prolonged assault. Evidence presented during the trial detailed a pattern of escalating violence in the months leading up to that night.

James was transported to hospital in critical condition. Despite weeks of treatment, he died six weeks later from his injuries.
During proceedings, the jury reviewed CCTV footage, medical testimony, and witness statements. After deliberation, they found Murphy guilty of murder. She was sentenced to life in prison.

For James’ family, the verdict marked accountability. But as they have expressed, no sentence can undo the loss of a son, a loved one, a life taken too soon.
Cases like this are painful reminders of the devastating consequences of domestic violence — and the importance of recognizing warning signs before escalation turns fatal.
Justice may close a chapter in court.
Grief, however, continues beyond the courtroom.
