A Hero Recognized: Col. Paris D. Davis Awarded the Medal of Honor

On March 3, 2023, President Joe Biden presented the Medal of Honor to retired U.S. Army Col. Paris D. Davis during a White House ceremony — nearly 58 years after the extraordinary bravery that defined his legacy.

Then-Captain Davis served with the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) during the Vietnam War. On June 17–18, 1965, near Bồng Sơn, Vietnam, he acted as detachment commander and advisor to a South Vietnamese Regional Force Company when his unit came under intense enemy attack.

According to the official citation, Captain Davis displayed “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty.” Despite being wounded multiple times, he repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to rally his men, reorganize defenses, and rescue the injured. He refused medical evacuation, choosing instead to remain on the battlefield — leading, inspiring, and ensuring that every member of his command was recovered and extracted.

The Medal of Honor, the highest military decoration in the United States, was awarded in recognition of his selfless courage, unwavering leadership, and extraordinary heroism.

Some acts of bravery echo across decades. This was one of them.
