Archaeologists are working to uncover a 3,000-year-old mystery hidden beneath Egypt’s greatest temple complex, Karnak Temple Complex — one of the largest religious sites ever built in the ancient world.

Recent scans and underground surveys revealed previously unknown chambers and structures buried deep below the temple foundations, believed to date back to Egypt’s powerful New Kingdom period. Researchers suspect the hidden spaces may have been used for sacred rituals, royal storage, or secret ceremonial passages connected to the worship of the god Amun.

The discovery could reshape historians’ understanding of ancient Egyptian religion and engineering, offering new clues about how priests and pharaohs maintained spiritual and political power more than three millennia ago.
