Roselle: The Guide Dog Who Led Her Owner to Safety on 9/11

During the tragic events of September 11 attacks on September 11, 2001, a guide dog named Roselle showed extraordinary calm and dedication while helping her owner, Michael Hingson, escape from the World Trade Center in New York City.

When American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center, the building shook violently. Michael Hingson, who was working on the 78th floor, relied on Roselle’s training as a guide dog to navigate the chaos. Despite the alarms, smoke, and panic around them, Roselle remained calm and focused.

She carefully guided Hingson down 1,463 stairs, step by step, through crowded stairwells filled with frightened office workers. Witnesses later recalled how the dog’s steady behavior helped reassure others during the long descent. The journey out of the tower reportedly took about an hour.

Shortly after Roselle and her owner reached safety, the North Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed. Roselle’s actions that day were widely recognized as an example of the life-saving role that service animals can play during emergencies.

Roselle later received several honors for her bravery and continued living with Hingson until she passed away in 2011. Her story remains one of the most remembered examples of the courage and loyalty shown by service animals, reminding people around the world of the powerful bond between humans and the animals trained to help them.
