Tanner Hornerâs Chilling Alleged Final Words to Athena Strand, 7, Before Murder Revealed
Jurors heard the final haunting words former FedEx driver Tanner Horner claimed he said to Athena Strand before his alter-ego took over the killed the 7-year-old.
Police interview footage played in court April 9 showed Horner describing how heâd ordered the girl to get into the truck after stopping at her Wise County, Texas home to deliver a package of Barbie dolls, meant to be her Christmas present.
âJust get in the back of the van,â Horner told investigators of their alleged final exchange, according to The New York Post. âWeâre going to the hospital.â
Horner initially claimed that heâd panicked after hitting the girl with the truckâbut prosecutors have questioned that claim, showing the jury an image taken from the truckâs surveillance camera that showed a seemingly uninjured Strand kneeling behind the driverâs seat.
âShe was very much alive and very much uninjured when he put her in the truck,â Wise County District Attorney James Stainton said in his opening remarks, according to The Fort Worth Star-Telgram. âThe first thing Tanner Horner says to Athena when he picks her up and puts her in his truck, he leans down and says, âDonât scream or Iâll hurt you.â He says that twice. ⊠Thatâs the first thing out of his mouth. He made good on it.â

Tanner Horner Allegedly Claims His Alter Ego Zero Killed Athena Strand
While speaking to investigators, Horner allegedly claimed that an alter-ego he referred to as Zero âtook overâ and killed the young girl.
Sgt. Job Espinoza, the lead investigator in the Texas Rangersâ search for the missing girl, testified April 8, per CBS News, that investigators would often play into the idea of the alter ego, addressing âZeroâ directly as they tried to get information on Athenaâs whereabouts.
âHis demeanor, physical demeanor changes,â Espinoza testified. âHis head goes into a sideways motion. His eyes roll into the back of the head, and he pretends to turn it to âZero.ââ
Horner told investigators he âlistened to a little voiceâ inside his head when he decided to take Athena, describing it as like a âdreamâ or out of body experience.
At one point during an interview with investigators, per Court TV, Horner described Athena as a âsweet kidâ who had been âworried I was a kidnapper.â

âI tried to break her neck, make it as painless as possible, but it didnât work. She started crying,â he told them in videos played in court. âI didnât want her to see it coming. I couldnât take it if she was sitting there in pain. I wanted to do it as quick as possible but it didnât work.â
After strangling the child to death, Horner told investigators he âtossedâ her into a bamboo fieldâalthough her naked body was ultimately found in a river 12 or 13 miles away from her home.

Investigators have said the 7-year-old showed signs of possible SŃxual áŽssault. Horner, however, denied those claims telling investigators during an interview, âYouâre going to ask if I SŃxually áŽssaulted her, and I did not.â
He was not charged with any SŃxual-related offenses.
Horner told investigators during the interview that if he said too much to authorities that âZero is going to hurt meâ and tried to shift the blame for the killing onto the alter ego.
âI didnât do it, but he did, and thatâs what fâks with me,â Horner told police after his arrest, according to The New York Post. âIâm wondering who the hellâs been in my head this whole time.â
