THE LIVING LEGACY OF MARK GORALSKI: A CHAIN REACTION OF HOPE

When Mark Goralski’s kidneys began to fail, his son Josh did what any devoted child would do. During his college spring break, he stepped into a hospital room and donated his own kidney. That selfless act granted his father seven more years of life—seven years of laughter, shared meals, and memories that the family cherished as a miraculous gift.

However, the journey of a transplant recipient is often a fragile one. When that kidney eventually began to fail, Mark’s daughters, Bethany and Hannah, were immediately prepared to follow in their brother’s footsteps. They were ready to give a part of themselves to save him, but the window of opportunity closed too soon. Doctors determined Mark was too ill for another surgery, and in September 2018, he passed away.

In the depths of grief, most stories would have concluded with a sense of tragic finality. But for the Goralski sisters, the spirit of their father was too vibrant to let go. Just weeks after his funeral, Hannah made a phone call to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. By the following spring, both sisters underwent surgery to donate their kidneys.

This time, the recipients were not family members. They were complete strangers.

The sisters chose to give without conditions, but they could never have predicted the magnitude of their choice. Their altruism triggered an extraordinary chain reaction. When they donated to strangers, the loved ones of those recipients—moved by the grace of the gesture—stepped forward to donate to others on the waiting list. This “kidney chain” rippled across Chicago for months, connecting families who had previously been strangers through a shared bond of survival.

Because of Bethany and Hannah, parents who had spent years tethered to dialysis machines returned to their children. Families who had lost hope were given a second chance.

The sisters attribute this move to the man who raised them. Mark Goralski was a mentor and a quiet servant of his community who helped others without ever seeking the spotlight. He taught his children that the most profound way to honor a life is to serve another. Through their sacrifice, Mark’s heart continues to beat in the lives of people he never met. It is a powerful reminder that a true legacy is not defined by what we keep, but by what we choose to give away.
