The Incredible Bond of Friendship: Why One Woman Carried a Child for Her Best Friend

For Kevin and Nicole Beretini, the journey toward parenthood was defined by a decade of hope and heartbreak. After marrying in 2010, they dreamed of raising a family in Smithton, New York, but year after year, they faced the agonizing silence of infertility. While their close friends, Lyanna and Sean, were easily expanding their family to include five children, the Beretinis were met with a medical wall that seemed insurmountable. The root of their struggle was a diagnosis from Nicole’s youth: Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP).

TTP is a rare and life-threatening autoimmune disorder that causes spontaneous blood clots throughout the body. Nicole had battled the condition since she was sixteen, managing it with strict medication. However, doctors delivered a devastating blow: the very medicine keeping Nicole alive would be fatal to a developing fetus, yet ceasing the treatment would likely result in her own death. Facing the reality that she could conceive but never safely carry a child to term, the couple’s dream appeared to be over.

That was until Lyanna made a life-changing offer. Witnessing her friends’ pain, she volunteered to become their surrogate. In July 2016, embryos were successfully implanted, marking the beginning of a unique four-person journey toward a single birth. Dr. Richard Klein, their obstetrician, noted the extraordinary atmosphere of love and cooperation as both couples attended every appointment together. What began as a medical necessity evolved into a testament of selfless friendship, proving that when a traditional path to family is blocked, the devotion of a true friend can build a new one.
