AN EXTREMELY RARE DISTAL MUSCULAR ATROPHY ONCE LIMITED KAITLIN — NOW SHE’S DEFYING IT IN TRIATHLONS

Born with an extremely rare form of distal muscular atrophy affecting her lower extremities and vocal cords, Kaitlin’s life began with challenges most children never have to face.
From a very young age, she struggled not only with movement but also with breathing — a condition that required immediate and ongoing medical attention. Her journey led her through multiple complex surgeries at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, each one critical to her survival and quality of life.

One of those procedures focused on rebuilding her airway, giving her the ability to breathe more safely. Another involved the surgical placement of more than 30 pieces of medical hardware into her small body — a difficult and delicate process that tested her strength in unimaginable ways.
For her family, every step of the journey has been filled with both fear and hope.

“There were moments we didn’t know what the future would look like,” a family member shared. “But Kaitlin never stopped fighting, even when everything felt overwhelming.”
Despite the physical and emotional toll of her condition and treatments, Kaitlin has continued to push forward with incredible determination.

Today, her story has taken a powerful turn.
Against all odds, Kaitlin is now participating in triathlon events designed to empower athletes with physical and visual challenges. What once seemed impossible has become a symbol of her resilience — from hospital rooms to race courses, she is redefining what strength truly means.

“Seeing her cross that finish line is something we will never forget,” her family said. “She’s not just surviving — she’s living, and she’s inspiring everyone around her.”
Kaitlin’s journey is a reminder that even in the face of rare and complex medical conditions, courage and support can open doors to new possibilities.
