A RARE DISTAL MUSCULAR ATROPHY ONCE TOOK HER VOICE AND STRENGTH — NOW KAITLIN IS DEFYING LIMITS IN TRIATHLONS

Born with an extremely rare form of distal muscular atrophy affecting her lower extremities and vocal cords, young Kaitlin has spent much of her life facing challenges most children could never imagine.

From an early age, simple movements became difficult, and even breathing safely required medical intervention. Her condition gradually affected the strength in her legs and her ability to speak normally, leading to years of hospital visits, treatments, and difficult procedures.

At St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Kaitlin underwent multiple major surgeries in hopes of improving her quality of life. One procedure was performed to rebuild her airway, helping her breathe more safely. Another involved surgeons carefully placing more than 30 pieces of medical hardware into her tiny body to support her fragile frame.

For her family, watching their little girl endure so much at such a young age was heartbreaking.
“There were moments we felt completely helpless,” one family member shared. “But Kaitlin never stopped fighting, even on the hardest days.”

Despite the pain, long recoveries, and physical limitations, Kaitlin refused to let her condition define her future.
Today, she is doing something truly inspiring — participating in triathlon events designed to empower athletes with physical and visual disabilities. Crossing finish lines that once seemed impossible, Kaitlin has become a symbol of courage and determination to everyone around her.

“Seeing her smile while competing brings tears to our eyes every time,” her family said. “After everything she’s endured, she still finds joy in being a kid.”
