Vatican Prepares Pope Leo XIV’s Apostolic Journey to Spain

The Vatican is preparing for Pope Leo XIV’s Apostolic Journey to Spain, scheduled for June 6–12, 2026. According to the official Vatican programme, the visit will include major stops in Madrid, Barcelona, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, making it one of the most important journeys of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate so far.

The motto of the journey is “Raise Your Eyes”, inspired by the Gospel of John. Vatican News reports that the trip will include a full programme of speeches, meetings, liturgies, and encounters with political, religious, civic, and social leaders.

Madrid: Faith, Youth, and National Dialogue

Pope Leo XIV is expected to begin his visit in Madrid on June 6, 2026. There, he will be welcomed by King Felipe VI at the Royal Palace before meeting government authorities, civil society representatives, and the diplomatic corps. Vatican News also notes that the Pope will lead a prayer vigil with young people in Plaza de Lima, turning the Spanish capital into a center of faith, hope, and national reflection.

Madrid will likely be one of the most symbolic stops of the journey. The Pope’s presence there will highlight the relationship between the Holy See and Spain, while also giving him a platform to speak about peace, social responsibility, dialogue, and the role of faith in public life.

 Barcelona and the Sagrada Família

One of the most anticipated moments will take place in Barcelona, where Pope Leo XIV is scheduled to visit the world-famous Sagrada Família Basilica. Vatican News reported earlier that the Pope will inaugurate the newest and tallest tower of the basilica, linked to the centenary of the death of architect Antoni Gaudí.

The official Sagrada Família site also confirmed the Pope’s expected presence at the central event commemorating the 100th anniversary of Gaudí’s death. For Barcelona, this will be a historic spiritual and cultural moment, connecting Catholic faith, sacred architecture, artistic genius, and the memory of one of Spain’s most beloved figures.

Canary Islands: A Message for Migrants and the Vulnerable

The journey will also take Pope Leo XIV to the Canary Islands, including Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife. AP reports that the Pope is expected to meet migrants and organizations helping them, as the islands remain a major arrival point for people crossing from Africa toward Spain.

This part of the visit will carry a strong humanitarian message. Pope Leo XIV is expected to emphasize dignity, compassion, protection of life, and the responsibility of societies to care for people fleeing poverty, conflict, and desperation.

A Journey of Faith, Culture, and Human Dignity

Pope Leo XIV’s journey to Spain will bring together several powerful themes: faith, youth, migration, cultural memory, sacred art, and social responsibility. From the royal and civic meetings in Madrid, to the solemn beauty of the Sagrada Família in Barcelona, to the humanitarian encounter in the Canary Islands, the visit is expected to become a major moment for the Catholic Church in Spain and for the wider world.

The message of the journey is clear: raise your eyes, renew hope, protect human dignity, and build a future rooted in faith, solidarity, and peace.
