THE WORST DAY OF THE YEAR BROUGHT THE HARDEST NEWS YET FOR WILL ROBERTS
Sometimes life can deliver more heartbreak in a single day than most people could imagine enduring in a lifetime.
For the Roberts family of Ralph, Alabama, May 26 has always been a date marked by sorrow.
It is the day they lost their precious daughter, Darby Kate.
In 2013, Jason and Brittney Roberts walked out of Children’s of Alabama carrying a grief that would forever change their family. Darby Kate was just 68 days old when she passed away.
Her big brother, Will, was only 2 years old.
Even then, he was learning what loss meant.
Now, thirteen years later, the Roberts family found themselves back in the very same hospital, facing another heartbreaking chapter.
Will Roberts is 15 years old.
He should be thinking about school, sports, summer plans, and time with friends.
Instead, he is fighting for his life against bone cancer.
On Tuesday, Will was supposed to be headed back to California for treatment at the Sarcoma Oncology Center in Santa Monica. His trip had already been delayed because of weather.
Then came another setback.
Will began experiencing headaches and nausea and was rushed to Children’s of Alabama for evaluation.
What doctors discovered would leave the family devastated.
Late that evening, Brittney sent a brief text message:
“Will has 3 spots on his brain.”
A few words.
A lifetime of fear contained inside them.
Doctors also discovered cancerous spots beneath both of Will’s eyes in the surrounding soft tissue.
As rain fell from gray Alabama skies, Jason, Brittney, and Will eventually returned home that evening carrying news no family ever wants to hear.
Exhausted.
Heartbroken.
Overwhelmed.
Will collapsed onto the family couch.
And nearby, Rebel the dog quietly took his place on the rug below.
Those who know dogs understand.
They somehow sense pain.
They know when something isn’t right.
And Rebel seemed to know his boy needed him.
While Will rested, Jason and Brittney were already making plans for the next step in the fight.
Time suddenly felt more precious than ever.
The family’s scheduled flight to California had been missed because of the emergency hospital visit.
Waiting wasn’t an option.
So Jason made arrangements for a private flight to ensure Will could get to California without any further delays.
The cost was significant.
The urgency was even greater.
Brittney later shared:
“We were able to get a private flight and it’s costing $25,000. That way we are guaranteed to get to Santa Monica and be at clinic first thing in the morning.”
She also expressed gratitude for the medical team at Children’s of Alabama.
“Our oncologist was amazing today and made sure we are safe to fly.”
By the time testing and scans were completed, their scheduled travel plans were gone.
But a new plan was already taking shape.
Doctors in California had already begun coordinating Will’s next treatment strategy.
“Dr. Gordon and her team have already orchestrated a game plan. They know it’s imperative to start immediately.”
This time, Brittney made a decision.
She would not stay behind.
“I will no longer stay behind. I will travel with Will and Jason due to the circumstances now.”
Their younger son Charlie would remain in Alabama with family until arrangements could be made for everyone to be together again.
And through all the fear, all the uncertainty, and all the exhaustion, Brittney found the strength to share words that touched thousands of people.
Standing in the very hospital where they had lost Darby Kate thirteen years earlier, she wrote:
“Thirteen years ago today, we walked out of this same hospital without Darby Kate after her loss shattered our family. Today, we walked out carrying devastating news once again, but this time, we walked out WITH our son and for that, we are still praising God.”
Those words reveal the extraordinary faith that continues to carry this family through unimaginable trials.
“These hallways have held trauma, fear, heartbreak, and memories I wish never existed. But tonight they also held something else… gratitude.”
Gratitude that Will was still there.
Gratitude that there was no major swelling or pressure on his brain.
Gratitude that doctors in California were already preparing for the next fight.
And gratitude that tomorrow still existed.
“I do not know what tomorrow holds. I do not know how this story ends. But I do know this: God has carried us through these hospital doors before, and we are trusting Him to carry us again.”
As dawn breaks over Alabama, a private jet will lift off carrying Will and his parents west toward California.
Toward doctors.
Toward treatment.
Toward another battle.
Toward hope.
As the aircraft climbs into the morning sky, thousands of people will be praying for the brave young man on board.
Praying for wisdom for his doctors.
Praying for strength for his parents.
Praying for comfort for Charlie.
Praying for healing.
Praying for a miracle.
And back home in Alabama, one loyal dog named Rebel will likely wait by the couch, hoping for the day his best friend comes home again.
Today, the Roberts family needs every prayer, every encouraging word, and every ounce of hope we can send.
Please take a moment to leave a message for Will and his family.
Pray for healing.
Pray for strength.
Pray for safe travels.
Pray for miracles.
Because no family should have to carry a burden like this alone.
