A Florida man has been arrested after police say a family dog was repeatedly harmed with a shovel during a disturbing domestic dispute that has left local residents outraged.

Christopher Jerome Toliver, 37, of St. Petersburg, was taken into custody following an incident that allegedly unfolded in June 2026.

According to investigators, officers were initially called to the scene after reports of an argument between Toliver and his girlfriend. Authorities say the disagreement escalated, and the woman reported being physically hurt during the confrontation.

Police documents state that when she attempted to contact emergency services, her phone was allegedly taken from her. She later managed to reach authorities using a friend’s phone.

As officers continued their investigation, additional allegations emerged involving the family’s dog.

Witnesses told police they saw the animal being struck multiple times with a shovel. Investigators later recovered a text message allegedly sent by Toliver in which he admitted to harming the dog several times.

The revelation has sparked anger among animal lovers across the community, with many expressing concern for the welfare of animals caught in dangerous household situations.

“Dogs trust us completely,” one local resident said. “They depend on people for safety and care. Hearing something like this is heartbreaking.”

Animal welfare advocates say the case serves as another reminder of the importance of reporting suspected abuse and ensuring vulnerable animals receive protection when warning signs appear.

Following the investigation, Toliver was arrested and charged with felony animal cruelty, domestic battery, and witness tampering.

Authorities have not released additional information regarding the dog’s condition.

The case remains under investigation.
