A New York couple have been accused of 𝚜𝚑𝚘𝚌𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚐 neglect after authorities discovered a 𝚍𝚎𝚊𝚍 puppy, a severely underweight dog, and a child living in what investigators described as filthy and hazardous conditions inside their home.

Stephen Andres, 42, and Tara Andres, 44, of Lackawanna, New York, have been indicted on felony animal cruelty and child endangerment charges following a concerning investigation that began with a single phone call.

According to authorities, the case came to light when Stephen Andres contacted the SPCA seeking assistance in removing a dog that had passed away from the residence.

But what investigators reportedly discovered inside the property left even experienced officers deeply troubled.

A 10-month-old puppy named Bones was found unresponsive within the home. Following an examination, veterinarians concluded the young dog’s passing was most likely the result of long-term and severe lack of proper nutrition.

Officials said another dog, a seven-year-old pet named Diamond, was discovered alive but in very poor physical condition. Investigators reported the animal had also suffered from extended lack of adequate care.

Fortunately, Diamond was removed from the property, received veterinary treatment, and has since been placed in a new home where she is now recovering.

The situation became even more serious when authorities reportedly found a child living in the same environment.

Prosecutors say the conditions inside the residence were unsanitary and potentially unsafe, leading to additional child endangerment charges against the couple.

“No animal should have to endure suffering caused by neglect,” one animal welfare advocate said following the case. “Every pet deserves proper care, safety, and compassion.”

Court records show the couple have been released under supervision while legal proceedings continue.

As part of the ongoing case, a court order currently prohibits both individuals from owning, possessing, or having custody of animals.

They are expected to appear in court again on June 17.

Meanwhile, animal welfare supporters continue to remember Bones, the young puppy whose heartbreaking passing helped bring the case to light.

Though his life was cut short, advocates hope his story will encourage greater awareness of animal welfare concerns and remind people to report suspected neglect when they see it.

“His story matters,” one supporter said. “And we hope it helps protect other animals in the future.”
