FIVE-YEAR-OLD GIRL WITH A RARE SLEEP DISORDER FORCED INTO A LIFE OF BEGGING AFTER BEING SOLD, ENDURING DAILY SUFFERING ON THE STREETS

Born weighing more than 4kg and arriving in the world as a healthy newborn, little Anabelle’s future once seemed full of promise.

The seven-year-old girl from the Philippines was born with Crouzon Syndrome, a rare genetic condition that affects the development of the skull and facial bones. As she grew older, the condition became more noticeable, leaving her with distinctive facial features, including prominent eyes caused by the abnormal growth of her skull.

For many children, a medical condition means extra support and care from family members.

For Anabelle, it meant something very different.

The youngest of seven children in an impoverished household, Anabelle was separated from her family at a young age and ended up in the hands of people who exploited vulnerable children for money on the streets.

She spent much of her early childhood being moved from place to place across the island of Negros, often seen begging in busy public areas while adults controlled where she went and how she lived.

According to those who later helped rescue her, Anabelle endured years of neglect, instability, and fear.

The little girl remained trapped in that environment until she was discovered by the Kalipay Negrense Foundation, a charity dedicated to helping children who have experienced trafficking, exploitation, and abuse.

By then, she was only five years old.

Staff members quickly realized that Anabelle needed not only safety and emotional support, but also urgent medical attention.

Her condition had become increasingly serious.

Because of the way her skull had developed, Anabelle struggled with complications that affected her everyday life. Her prominent eyes made it difficult for her to fully close them while sleeping, creating additional health concerns and discomfort.

One of the people most touched by her story was Gonzalo Erize, a volunteer from Argentina.

Determined to help, he used his own resources and worked with donors to raise funds for the surgery Anabelle desperately needed.

“She deserves the same opportunities as any other child,” he reportedly told supporters. “No child should have to endure what she has experienced.”

Those caring for Anabelle say the emotional scars from her early years have taken time to heal.

“There were nights when she would wake up frightened from bad dreams,” a caregiver shared. “But little by little, she began to feel safe.”

Recently, Anabelle underwent surgery in Manila as part of her ongoing treatment journey. Gonzalo flew thousands of miles from Argentina to be by her side during the procedure, offering support to the little girl whose story had captured his heart.

Today, Anabelle’s future looks far brighter than it once did.

Surrounded by people who genuinely care for her well-being, she is finally receiving the medical treatment, protection, and encouragement every child deserves.

And while her journey is far from over, those closest to her say the shy little girl who once wandered the streets now has something she never truly had before:

Hope.

A hope that her difficult past will not define her future.

A hope that one day she will be remembered not for the hardships she endured, but for the remarkable courage she showed in overcoming them.
