A man accused of causing the death of a lost husky that had simply followed him home is now facing multiple felony charges as legal proceedings continue in Indiana.

Authorities say Shadow, a friendly two-year-old husky, became separated from his owner near a store in Portage and wandered away from home.

What happened next has left animal lovers across the community deeply saddened.

According to investigators, Shadow followed 38-year-old Tony Lee Hughes to his mobile home. Rather than helping locate the dog’s owner, Hughes is accused of tying the animal outside near a stairwell before causing a series of injuries that ultimately proved fatal.

Witnesses reportedly rushed outside after hearing distressing cries coming from the area. Several people later told police they saw the husky unable to escape while the situation unfolded.

Veterinarians later documented ten separate injuries.

After Shadow was identified through his microchip and reunited with his devastated owner, the extent of his condition left the family facing an impossible decision. Despite efforts to save him, the beloved pet’s condition was too severe, and he was humanely euthanized.

Investigators say Hughes claimed the dog had bitten him. However, police reported finding no visible bite injuries, no damage to his clothing, and no evidence supporting the claim. Witnesses also reportedly described Shadow as gentle and friendly.

The investigation uncovered additional concerns. Officers allegedly found homemade weapons, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and a controlled medication while searching the property.

• Cruel treatment of an animal (Felony)
• Theft
• Unlawful possession or use of a controlled medication
• Possession of drug paraphernalia

Court records show his bond was set at $3,000, and the case is continuing through the legal system.

For Shadow’s family, however, no court ruling can erase the loss of a dog they describe as loving and trusting.

“He was supposed to come home,” one supporter said. “Instead, his family received the worst possible phone call.”

The case has reignited debate over penalties for animal cruelty, with many community members calling for stronger consequences in cases involving intentional harm to pets.

As the court process moves forward, supporters continue remembering Shadow not for the circumstances of his passing, but for the loyal and affectionate companion he was during his short life.
