Sammy Basso, One of the Longest-Living People With Progeria, Left Behind a Legacy of Science, Courage, and Hope After His Death at 28

Sammy Basso was one of the longest-living people in the world with progeria, a rare genetic condition that causes the body to age much faster than usual. He passed away on October 5, 2024, at the age of 28, leaving behind a story that touched countless people far beyond Italy.

But Sammy’s life was never defined only by his condition.

He became a biologist, completed a master’s degree in Molecular Biology, and dedicated much of his life to helping others understand progeria. Through knowledge, public awareness, and scientific commitment, he turned his personal journey into a mission that gave hope to many families facing the same diagnosis.

Sammy also founded the Associazione Italiana Progeria Sammy Basso, an organization created to support research, raise awareness, and give a voice to people living with this rare disease. His work helped bring progeria out of silence and into public conversation, making more people aware of the challenges, needs, and dignity of those affected.

What made Sammy unforgettable was not only how long he lived, but how deeply he lived. He studied, traveled, spoke publicly, supported research, and showed the world that a fragile body could still carry extraordinary strength.

His story remains a reminder that courage is not the absence of hardship. It is the decision to keep building meaning despite it.

Sammy Basso left this world at 28, but his legacy continues through science, awareness, and the lives he inspired.
