Freight Train Derails in Canada: Carriages Overturn Near Homes, Power Lines Downed

A freight train derailed in Repentigny, a suburb north of Montreal, Canada, causing significant damage to infrastructure and leaving thousands of residents without electricity.

Dramatic images and videos from the scene show overturned tank cars and carriages crumpled into a heap, with debris scattered across roads. Fences, pavements, trees, and power lines were ripped up during the incident, and one derailed tanker came perilously close to a local resident’s house and a transmission tower.

Emergency services, including fire crews and police, responded quickly to the crash at the intersection of De la Paix and J.-A.-Paré streets. The City of Repentigny confirmed that emergency teams were on site.

Repentigny Mayor Nicolas Dufour stated that, as of the latest update, there were no reported injuries. He also noted that there was no indication the train was carrying dangerous goods, and authorities were working to secure the area.

Hydro-Québec reported that approximately 2,674 customers lost power due to the damaged power lines.

The derailment has completely blocked a local road, with wreckage spilling onto the street. Social media footage captured the chaotic scene, showing horrified onlookers and the extent of the destruction.

This incident comes just weeks after a separate fatal train collision in Bedford, England, that injured nearly 90 people.
