On June 30, 2026, deputies executing a search warrant at a home in Hamden, Vinton County, Ohio, in connection with an indecent exposure allegation against Gary Lee Siders Jr. made a discovery that investigators say left even experienced officers stunned.

Inside the deteriorating home, authorities found 16 children, ranging in age from approximately 20 months to 18 years old, allegedly living in conditions described as filthy and dangerous.

According to investigators, many of the children had been confined to a small 12-by-12-foot room surrounded by human waste, insects, and severe unsanitary conditions. Officials say several children showed signs of developmental delays, with some reportedly unable to speak.

Seven of the children were rushed to hospitals for emergency treatment. Two were reported to be in critical condition and were airlifted by medical helicopter.

Authorities emphasize that this is not a human trafficking case. Instead, prosecutors allege it involves years of severe child abuse and neglect within a single family. Investigators also say the children had virtually no educational records and had lived in near-total isolation from the outside world.

Four members of the same family have been charged:

• Gary Lee Siders Jr., 36, the children’s father.
• Elizabeth Ann Siders, 33, identified as the mother of all 16 children. Court records indicate she married Gary Jr. in 2008 when she was 15 years old.
• Gary Lee Siders Sr., 73, the children’s grandfather.
• Christina Siders, 66, the children’s grandmother.

Each defendant faces 16 counts of child endangerment causing serious physical harm, resulting in a total of 64 second-degree felony charges. All four have pleaded not guilty, and the allegations remain subject to court proceedings.

As of late July, the legal case continues to develop.

Gary Siders Sr. was released on a recognizance bond with GPS monitoring after suffering serious medical problems that required hospitalization. His attorney, Dorian Baum, argues that the elderly man has significant physical and cognitive impairments, was not the primary caregiver, and believes the matter should be handled primarily through child dependency proceedings rather than criminal prosecution. A competency evaluation has also been requested.

Meanwhile, Gary Jr., Elizabeth, and Christina remain jailed, each held on $300,000 bond. Defense attorneys have filed motions requesting competency evaluations and, in some cases, reductions in bond. Courts have also issued gag orders restricting public statements involving Gary Jr. and Christina.

The investigation is now awaiting action from a Vinton County grand jury, which will determine whether formal indictments will be issued. Because Vinton County is one of Ohio’s smallest counties, grand juries meet less frequently, slowing the legal process.

The case has also created a significant financial burden for local authorities.

The State of Ohio has approved $1 million in emergency funding to help provide foster care, medical treatment, counseling, and other essential services for the 16 rescued children. Officials say the rural county continues to face major resource challenges while caring for the siblings.

The children have since been removed from the home and placed under the protection of Ohio’s child welfare system. Some have already been released from hospitals and are receiving ongoing medical and psychological care. Their current locations and identities have not been publicly disclosed to protect their privacy.
