UNITED KINGDOM — The death of 13-month-old Preston Davey continues to prompt discussion about child safeguarding and the importance of thorough investigations into the deaths of vulnerable children.
Investigation Uncovered New Evidence
When Preston was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital in July 2023, emergency responders were initially given an explanation for his condition.
As the investigation progressed, however, forensic examinations and a Home Office post-mortem identified acute upper airway obstruction, leading detectives to examine the circumstances surrounding his death in greater detail.
Investigators also relied on digital evidence, including mobile phone data and videos recovered during the investigation, to help establish a timeline of events presented during the trial.
Court Outcome
Following the trial:
- Jamie Varley was convicted and received a whole-life order, meaning he will never be eligible for parole.
- John McGowan-Fazakerley was also convicted of offences connected to the case and was sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment.
