Born healthy and full of promise, Matvey Zakharenko, from Tula in southern Moscow, Russia, faced an unimaginable turn of events when he was just three days old.

Doctors diagnosed Matvey with mild jaundice and recommended a short course of phototherapy. It seemed like a routine treatment that countless newborns receive every day. But because of a moment of negligence, the infant’s life changed forever.

Hospital protocol required every baby undergoing phototherapy to be closely monitored by medical staff at all times. However, during Matvey’s treatment, the nurse on duty stepped away, leaving him unattended. That single lapse in supervision led to a life-changing accident.

The phototherapy lamp above Matvey malfunctioned due to an electrical fault, igniting a fire in his incubator. By the time staff rushed back and put out the flames, the tiny baby had sustained severe burns across approximately 75% of his body.

Matvey’s life had only just begun, yet this accident changed the path ahead in ways no one could have imagined. His skin developed extensive burn injuries, large areas were badly damaged, and several internal organs were also affected. Remarkably, the brave little fighter survived despite the enormous challenges, continuing to show extraordinary strength every day.

Even more heartbreaking, after learning about the accident and seeing the extent of her son’s injuries, Matvey’s biological mother felt unable to face what lay ahead and chose to leave. Knowing he would need years of complex medical care and ongoing support, she decided she could not take on that responsibility. It was a decision that left many people deeply saddened, especially at a time when the little boy needed love and care the most.

News of Matvey’s story quickly spread after he was left behind. Hospital staff, generous donors, and charitable organizations came together to raise funds for his treatment and help him find a family willing to love and care for him unconditionally.

As Matvey’s story gained widespread attention, his biological mother later tried to regain custody. However, the court declined the request, believing he would have a brighter future with a more stable family. Eventually, a woman from Moscow named Svetlana was granted the opportunity to adopt him.

Svetlana later created a blog to share updates and photos with the many people who had followed Matvey’s journey. Even so, she chose to keep his public appearances limited so she could focus on giving him the peaceful childhood he deserved.

Over the years, Matvey has undergone several reconstructive procedures to improve his burn scars and reshape his nose. He has made remarkable progress in both his health and appearance. Today, he is an active, cheerful, and bright young boy, surrounded by the warmth and love of his adoptive family. His journey continues to inspire countless people, and everyone hopes the very best lies ahead for this courageous little fighter.
