Luigi Mangione Pleads Guilty in UnitedHealthcare CEO Killing

Luigi Mangione Pleads Guilty in Federal Case Over Brian Thompson’s Killing
On August 14, 2026, Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty in Manhattan federal court to charges stemming from the December 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
During his statement to the court, Mangione admitted that he personally shot Thompson and acknowledged that his actions were illegal.

However, the federal guilty plea does not resolve the separate murder case in New York State court. Mangione continues to face state-level murder charges, although those proceedings have been paused while his attorneys seek to have the case dismissed on double jeopardy grounds.
The two cases are proceeding separately, meaning the outcome of the federal prosecution does not automatically determine what will happen in the state case.
Mangione’s federal sentencing is scheduled for December 18, 2026. Prosecutors are seeking a severe punishment that could potentially include life imprisonment.

The federal guilty plea marks a significant development in the case, but Mangione’s legal battles are not yet over as his attorneys continue challenging the separate state prosecution.
The case remains closely watched as the court considers both the appropriate federal sentence and the defense’s arguments regarding the New York State charges.
