MISSING 15-YEAR-OLD’S REMAINS IDENTIFIED IN LANDFILL WEEKS AFTER MAN WAS CHARGED WITH HIS MURDER
BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA — A devastating search for 15-year-old Ja’Derrius Minnieweather has ended after DNA testing confirmed that human remains recovered from a Louisiana landfill belonged to the teenager.
Ja’Derrius had been reported missing on June 5. On Wednesday, the East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner’s Office confirmed the remains found during the landfill search were his, with assistance from the LSU FACES Laboratory and the Louisiana State Police Crime Laboratory.
A SEARCH THROUGH A MASSIVE LANDFILL
Investigators began searching the East Baton Rouge Parish North Landfill in July after developing evidence that Ja’Derrius’ body may have been placed in a trash container and transported there.
The operation became an extraordinary effort involving local authorities, the FBI and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Search teams spent weeks narrowing down an enormous landfill site and processing large quantities of waste while working through extreme summer heat.
On Tuesday, authorities announced that human remains had finally been recovered.
At that point, officials were still awaiting DNA confirmation.
One day later, the coroner’s office delivered the heartbreaking answer.
The remains were Ja’Derrius.
A SUSPECT WAS ALREADY IN CUSTODY
The discovery came weeks after 51-year-old Maurice Parms was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Ja’Derrius’ death.
According to an arrest warrant, investigators allege Ja’Derrius was beaten during a confrontation involving Parms and a 16-year-old girl who was a longtime friend of the teenager.
Authorities allege Parms subsequently concealed the teenager’s body and disposed of evidence before the remains were transported to the landfill. These allegations have not been proven in court.
Parms was arrested on June 20.
He has since faced additional charges stemming from a separate alleged incident involving the 16-year-old girl, including second-degree rape, child trafficking and indecent behavior with juveniles.
HIS FAMILY FINALLY HAS AN ANSWER
For more than two months, Ja’Derrius’ family lived with the uncertainty of not knowing where he was.
The landfill search was exhausting and difficult, but investigators refused to stop.
The identification now provides the family with the answer they had been desperately seeking — even though it is an answer no parent should ever have to receive.
Ja’Derrius was only 15 years old.
He should have been preparing for another school year, spending time with friends and planning the future.
Instead, his family is preparing to bring him home for a final goodbye.
THE SEARCH MAY BE OVER — BUT THE CASE ISN’T
The DNA identification closes one painful chapter of the investigation, but significant questions surrounding Ja’Derrius’ final hours remain.
Authorities will continue examining the evidence recovered during the landfill operation as the criminal case against Parms proceeds.
For a family that spent weeks searching, there is now no more uncertainty about where Ja’Derrius is.
But there is still a long road ahead toward justice.
A 15-year-old disappeared.
A massive landfill was searched for weeks.
And now, his family finally knows where he was — but must face the heartbreaking reality that he will never come home alive.
The charges and allegations against Maurice Parms remain matters for the court to determine; he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
