For Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick, one of their latest family gatherings came with a movie screen, a horror showcase and a project that brought nearly everyone in the household into the same production.

The longtime Hollywood couple appeared alongside their son, Travis Bacon, in New York City on Wednesday, Aug. 19, as their new horror-comedy Family Movie screened during the Scary Movies XIV showcase at Film at Lincoln Center.

But this was far from an ordinary premiere.

Bacon and Sedgwick didn’t simply appear in the movie together. They co-directed it. Their two children, Travis and Sosie Bacon, are also part of the cast, making the film a genuine family collaboration both in front of and behind the camera.

And there was another reason the evening carried special meaning: the screening took place on Sedgwick’s 61st birthday.

A Movie That Really Became a Family Project

Bacon, 68, and Sedgwick have spent decades building separate and overlapping careers in Hollywood, but Family Movie offered them something unusual — the opportunity to create a project with both of their children.

The movie was first announced in November 2024 and combines comedy with slasher-movie chaos.

Its story centers on the Smiths, a filmmaking family attempting to complete a low-budget horror production. Their fictional troubles become frighteningly real when a dead body is discovered on the set, forcing the family to deal with an increasingly dangerous situation while still trying to keep their movie alive.

It is an especially fitting premise for a film made by an actual show-business family.

Bacon and Sedgwick play central roles while also sharing directing duties. Travis, 37, and his sister Sosie appear alongside their parents.

Sosie was not at the New York screening, but she previously explained how the unusual project came together.

Rather than being handed a conventional script and deciding afterward to work as a family, the idea began with the Bacons wanting to make something together.

According to Sosie, the family decided that a mix of comedy and horror was the right direction. They met with multiple writers before choosing Dan Beers to write the screenplay. She also joked that being one of the filmmakers’ children meant she did not exactly have to survive an intimidating audition process.

The result is a movie whose behind-the-scenes story almost mirrors its premise: a family attempting to make a film together.

The project also marked an important return for Bacon.

He had not directed a feature film in nearly two decades, making the experience of stepping behind the camera again particularly significant.

This time, however, he wasn’t doing it alone.

Sedgwick was working beside him as co-director, something Bacon later described as an enormous advantage. He said returning to directing felt familiar, while having his wife beside him meant there was always another person paying attention when he overlooked a detail or needed support.

That partnership adds another layer to a project already defined by family connections.

Instead of simply being two recognizable actors sharing scenes, Bacon and Sedgwick were making creative decisions together while directing their own children — an arrangement that could easily blur the boundaries between work and home.

By Bacon’s account, that closeness became a strength.

Premiere Night Became Birthday Night

The Aug. 19 screening also happened to fall on Sedgwick’s birthday, turning the New York appearance into something of a double celebration.

Bacon marked the occasion publicly with a personal birthday message for his wife.

He shared a compilation of moments from their life together, including glimpses of the couple spending time with their farm animals. His message celebrated another year of loving Sedgwick, offering a much more intimate counterpart to the family’s professional appearance that same day.

Their children joined in with tributes of their own.

Travis shared a childhood image of himself running around on a set and jokingly remembered interfering with one of his parents’ photo shoots when he was young.

Sosie posted her own affectionate message for Sedgwick, describing her mother as fierce, funny, loyal and deeply devoted to the people she loves.

Although Sosie wasn’t physically present at the screening, her tribute emphasized the family bond surrounding both Sedgwick’s birthday and the movie they had made together.

The Family Will Have to Wait for the Wider Release

Audiences outside the festival circuit will have some time to wait before seeing what the Bacon-Sedgwick family created.

Family Movie is scheduled to open in theaters on April 23, 2027.

Bacon confirmed the release date in a social media post shared on the same day as the New York screening, expressing the family’s excitement about finally bringing the project to audiences.

That theatrical release will mark the culmination of a collaboration that began years earlier and eventually placed four members of the same family at the center of one production.

For many Hollywood families, relatives may follow similar career paths without ever sharing the same project. The Bacons went considerably further.

They created a film about a filmmaking family, cast themselves together and placed Bacon and Sedgwick jointly in the director’s chair.

The result also gives a new dimension to a relationship audiences have watched for decades.

At the New York screening, there was the familiar sight of Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick together. But this time, their son was standing beside them, their daughter was part of the movie even though she couldn’t attend, and the project being celebrated belonged to all of them.

What began as the idea of making something together had become exactly that — not simply another Kevin Bacon movie or another Kyra Sedgwick project, but a family production in the most literal sense.

And when Family Movie reaches theaters in April 2027, audiences will finally get to see what happened when one of Hollywood’s best-known acting families decided that working together wasn’t enough.

They wanted to make the movie together, too.
