22-YEAR-OLD MAN VANISHES DURING MORNING HIKE IN ALASKA — DAYS LATER, SEARCH CREW FINDS HIS BODY AT THE BOTTOM OF A TALL CLIFF

PORT ARMSTRONG, ALASKA — A search for a 22-year-old man who disappeared during a morning hike in Alaska has ended in tragedy after rescuers found his body at the bottom of a tall cliff.

Ben Le, who had been working in the remote Port Armstrong area, was reported missing on Monday, August 10, after he failed to return from a hike as planned.

Three days later, a National Guard helicopter search crew spotted a motionless body in a gully below a cliff in the area where Le was believed to have disappeared.

His identity was confirmed the following day.

Authorities have not yet determined exactly how Le died.

HE LEFT FOR A HIKE — BUT NEVER CAME BACK

According to Alaska State Troopers, Le’s colleagues said he went hiking Monday morning and planned to return by approximately 4:30 p.m.

When he failed to show up, his colleagues immediately began looking for him.

They conducted an initial search by both land and boat before contacting Alaska State Troopers.

By Tuesday, a larger multi-agency search operation was underway, involving the Sitka Fire Department Search and Rescue and other agencies.

The remote environment presented serious challenges.

Sitka Fire Department Interim Chief Brian McLaughlin previously told the Daily Sitka Sentinel that rescuers were concerned about conditions including Le’s access to food and water and his exposure to the elements.

Every hour mattered as the search continued through the rugged Alaskan terrain.

A HELICOPTER CREW MADE THE DEVASTATING DISCOVERY

On Wednesday, August 12, a search crew aboard a National Guard helicopter spotted what appeared to be a body.

The person was located in a gully at the bottom of a tall cliff, in the area where investigators believed Le had gone missing.

The body was later recovered, and Alaska State Troopers confirmed Le’s identity on Thursday, August 13.

The discovery brought an end to the search but left Le’s loved ones with painful unanswered questions.

Authorities have not publicly determined whether he fell from the cliff, suffered a medical emergency or encountered another danger while hiking.

At this point, the exact circumstances surrounding his disappearance and death remain unknown.

HE WAS PLANNING A NEW CHAPTER

Le’s death came just as his family said he was preparing for a major change in his life.

He was the youngest of five siblings and was preparing to leave Alaska permanently, according to a family fundraising campaign.

His loved ones said he had plans to start a business centered on ministry and sharing his faith with others.

“He had so many ideas, plans, and things he was looking forward to,” his family wrote.

Now, those plans have been replaced by grief.

“His loss has left an enormous hole in our family,” they said, adding that they are trying to remain together while mourning and honoring his life.

FAMILY ASKS FOR HELP WITH FUNERAL COSTS

A GoFundMe campaign was established following Le’s death to help cover the cost of transporting his body and paying for funeral expenses.

As of August 17, the fundraiser had collected more than $17,000.

For his family, the financial support is only one part of the response to an unexpected loss.

They are now focused on bringing Ben home and remembering the young man they say had been looking forward to building a completely new future.

A TRAGIC REMINDER OF THE RISKS OF REMOTE HIKING

Alaska’s wilderness offers extraordinary scenery, but remote terrain can become dangerous very quickly.

Steep cliffs, unpredictable weather, limited access to food and water and the sheer difficulty of reaching someone in distress can turn a routine hike into a life-threatening emergency.

Le’s disappearance also highlights why search-and-rescue teams often race against the clock when a hiker fails to return as expected.

In his case, colleagues began searching when he did not come back, and multiple agencies joined the operation the following day.

But despite their efforts, rescuers ultimately found him at the bottom of a remote cliff.
