Family friend Jennifer Mercer said 12-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere was among those killed.

According to Mercer, Charlotte was the child who called 911 and attempted to get help for her family.

“Charlotte was the hero,” Mercer told The Associated Press.

The detail has become one of the most heartbreaking elements of the tragedy.

Charlotte reportedly tried to alert emergency responders while the crisis was unfolding inside the home.

She did not survive.

Family members identified the suspected attacker as Alan Smith, 44.

According to Brad Ireland, whose former wife and two children were among the victims, Smith was a relative who had recently been asked to move out of his parents’ home.

Ireland said Smith had lived with his parents for years before being asked to leave several weeks ago.

He allegedly returned to the family home Sunday evening while relatives were gathered for dinner.

Investigators have not publicly established a definitive motive.
