HEARTBROKEN FATHER SPEAKS OUT AFTER MONTANA FAMILY TRAGEDY CLAIMS HIS WIFE AND FOUR CHILDREN

BILLINGS, Mont. — A grieving Montana father is speaking publicly after a devastating family tragedy claimed the lives of his wife, his two children and two stepchildren — along with four other relatives — during a Sunday dinner outside Billings.

Adam Ghekiere, an airport rescue firefighter, was working when he heard an emergency dispatch reporting an active incident near the home of his in-laws.

What he did not yet know was that his own family was inside.

According to Ghekiere, he immediately began calling relatives before rushing toward the home. When he arrived, the house was already engulfed in flames.

HE RUSHED HOME AFTER HEARING THE RADIO CALL

Ghekiere said he was working at the Billings airport when information about the emergency came over a dispatch radio.

He began calling members of his family, trying desperately to determine whether they were safe.

Then he raced across town.

But by the time he reached the property, the situation had become catastrophic.

The home was burning, and responders were dealing with an extremely dangerous scene. Police had reportedly heard additional gunfire after arriving, forcing emergency crews to wait before fully approaching the property.

Two hours later, Ghekiere said, he learned the devastating truth: his wife and children were among the victims.

HIS TWO CHILDREN WERE KILLED

Ghekiere’s children, Charlotte, 12, and Landon, 15, were killed in the attack.

His wife, Megan Ghekiere, also died.

So did Megan’s two children from a previous relationship, Owen Ireland, 13, and Chloe Ireland, 7.

The loss means Ghekiere is now mourning not only his wife and two biological children, but also two stepchildren who were part of his family.

Four children were among the eight victims.

CHARLOTTE HAD CALLED 911

Perhaps the most heartbreaking revelation is that 12-year-old Charlotte was reportedly the person who called 911 from inside the home.

Her father said police later confirmed that she was the one who made the emergency call.

Family friend Jennifer Mercer described Charlotte as “the hero” for trying to get help as the crisis unfolded.

For Ghekiere, that knowledge has become part of the painful memory of his daughter’s final moments.

He also recalled a phrase Charlotte often told him whenever he said he loved her:

“I love you more.”

THE FAMILY WAS NOT EXPECTING THE CHILDREN TO BE THERE

According to Ghekiere, family dinners normally took place on Fridays.

The gathering on this particular Sunday was therefore unusual — and he believes the attacker may not have expected Charlotte and Landon to be present.

That detail has raised even more questions about what happened and whether the presence of the children was unexpected.

Authorities are still investigating the circumstances and have not established a definitive motive.

THE SUSPECT WAS A FAMILY MEMBER

Authorities and relatives have identified the suspect as 44-year-old Alan Smith, a member of the extended family.

Smith had reportedly been asked to move out of his parents’ home weeks before the tragedy.

According to family accounts, he returned to the property Sunday during the family gathering.

The attack then unfolded before the residence was set on fire. Smith was later found with an apparent self-inflicted injury and died after being taken to a hospital.

Investigators have not yet released a complete official explanation for the motive.

FOUR GENERATIONS WERE LOST

The eight victims represented four generations of the same blended family, ranging from a 92-year-old great-grandmother to a 7-year-old child.

The other victims included Dana and Barb Smith and Evelyn Smith, according to family and local reports.

The scale of the loss has left relatives and the Billings community struggling to comprehend what happened.

A family that had gathered for dinner would, within minutes, become the scene of one of the deadliest family tragedies in Montana this year.

THE FIRE COMPLICATED EVERYTHING

The investigation has been made even more difficult because the home was severely damaged by the fire.

Firefighters battled the blaze until approximately 1 a.m. Monday, while investigators have faced concerns about the structural integrity of the property.

The house was ultimately burned down to its foundation.

That means detectives must now carefully recover evidence from a heavily damaged scene while reconstructing what happened inside.

Police are expected to provide additional information as the investigation progresses.

A FATHER IS NOW LEFT WITH MEMORIES

For Ghekiere, the investigation is only one part of the aftermath.

He is now facing the unimaginable task of grieving four children and his wife.

Family members have described Charlotte and Landon as vibrant young people with their own personalities and dreams.

A fundraising effort established for the family described Landon as a caring and protective older brother, while Charlotte was remembered for her humor and personality.

Their lives ended during a family gathering that was never supposed to become a tragedy.

Authorities continue to work to establish the full timeline.

Among the questions still surrounding the case:

For Adam Ghekiere, however, the investigation can never change the most painful fact.

His wife is gone.

And in the middle of the chaos, Charlotte reached for the phone and tried to bring help.
