At just 22 weeks and six days pregnant, a mother was already fighting desperately to give her unborn twins a chance.

She was carrying fraternal twins when a large hematoma triggered premature labor. That night, a severe storm made an emergency flight impossible, leaving her with no choice but to endure a nearly two-hour ambulance journey to the nearest major hospital.

Doctors told her she needed to hold on until midnight — the moment her babies would reach 23 weeks — so they could attempt life-saving treatment if they were born.

For 12 agonizing hours, she fought to keep the twins inside.

But when she finally reached the hospital, the family received even more devastating news: doctors said they would need to make it another full week before the babies could receive the level of care they needed.

Shortly after 3:30 a.m., her first twin, Genesis, was born.

She weighed just 1 lb 2 oz and measured 12 inches.

For six precious minutes, Genesis was alive in her mother’s arms before her tiny lungs could no longer keep going.

As her mother held her daughter, she also delivered Genesis’s brother, Augustus, who had already passed away in the womb only minutes earlier. He weighed just 14 ounces and measured 11½ inches.

It was a moment the family will never forget.

“I held Genesis in my arms as she passed,” her mother shared. “At the same time, I was delivering her brother. It was the hardest day of my life.”

The twins were born on February 11, 2021.

Their mother says one of the most painful parts of their story is wondering whether earlier medical concerns could have changed what happened.

“I was told that what I experienced was considered normal with multiple pregnancies,” she said. “Knowing that is connected to why I lost my babies makes their story even harder to carry.”

For the family, Genesis and Augustus will never be remembered simply as babies who were lost. They were their children, deeply loved from the moment they were known.

“They were here, they were loved, and they will always be part of our family,” their mother said. “I wish they had been given more time, but I will carry their memory with me for the rest of my life.”

Genesis and Augustus may have had only the briefest beginning, but their place in their family’s heart will never be measured in minutes or weeks.
