MISSING HIKER FOUND DEAD FOUR DAYS AFTER VANISHING IN CALIFORNIA CANYON

A four-day search for 24-year-old Ian Roberts has ended in tragedy after his body was discovered in California’s Auburn State Recreation Area.

Roberts, from Roseville, California, was last seen around 9:45 a.m. Friday, Aug. 21, when he set out on a solo hike in the American River Canyon area. After he failed to return home, his family reported him missing early Saturday morning.

HIS VEHICLE WAS FOUND — BUT HE WAS NOWHERE TO BE SEEN

Investigators determined Roberts had parked near Overlook Park before heading into the canyon.

His vehicle was located, but Roberts was missing.

The search quickly grew into a major operation involving approximately 100 search-and-rescue personnel, along with helicopters, drones, K-9 teams and marine units searching areas around the American River.

The difficult terrain and temperatures reaching the mid-90s added to the challenge for rescuers.

 FOUR DAYS LATER, HE WAS FOUND

On Tuesday, Aug. 25, the Placer County Sheriff’s Office announced that Roberts had been found deceased inside the Auburn State Recreation Area.

Preliminary information indicated that he appeared to have slipped and fallen down a steep embankment.

Because the discovery occurred within Auburn city limits, the Auburn Police Department is handling the death investigation.

 POLICE SAY THERE IS CURRENTLY NO SIGN OF FOUL PLAY

Authorities emphasized that the investigation is not yet complete.

However, police said there is currently no information indicating that Roberts’ death resulted from foul play. The circumstances appear consistent with an accidental fall, although investigators will continue examining the available evidence before reaching a final conclusion.

That means the accidental-fall explanation remains preliminary, rather than a final official determination.

 A SEARCH THAT ENDED IN HEARTBREAK

For four days, rescuers and volunteers searched the rugged canyon hoping to bring Roberts home safely.

Instead, his family received devastating news.

Officials expressed their condolences to Roberts’ loved ones and thanked the many search-and-rescue professionals and volunteers who took part in the operation.
