A66 TRAGEDY: THE FINAL SECONDS BEFORE A DEVASTATING CRASH

Seven people lost their lives in a devastating collision on the A66 after a Volkswagen Passat traveled the wrong way along the highway and crashed head-on into a police vehicle.

Among those who died were 18-year-old Makai Saddington and four other young men traveling in the Passat.

Two police officers, PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough, also lost their lives in the collision.

THE OFFICERS WERE NOT INVOLVED IN THE ORIGINAL PURSUIT

One of the most significant details to emerge from the investigation is that Blades and Clough were not the officers involved in the pursuit that preceded the crash.

Police had reportedly been following the Passat before it began traveling against traffic.

The pursuit was then called off.

Approximately 10 seconds later, the Passat collided with the police vehicle.

The extremely short gap between the end of the pursuit and the collision has become a key part of the investigation.

 SOCIAL MEDIA VIDEOS UNDER SCRUTINY

Investigators are also examining reports that Saddington and others had been associated with videos posted online showing dangerous driving and police pursuits.

The material has renewed concerns about social-media content that can portray reckless driving as entertainment or encourage dangerous behavior.

Authorities are continuing to establish what, if any, connection those videos had to the events on the A66.

WHAT HAPPENED IN THOSE FINAL MOMENTS?

Investigators are working to reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the crash.

Among the questions being examined are:

• Why did the Passat continue traveling against traffic?
• What happened during the approximately 10 seconds after the pursuit was called off?
• What were the occupants doing immediately before the collision?
• Did previously shared online driving content have any relevance to the incident?

At this stage, investigators have not established definitive answers to all of those questions.

The crash claimed the lives of five young men and two police officers, leaving families and colleagues facing an enormous loss.

PC Matthew Blades and PC Tom Clough were responding as police officers when their journey ended in the collision.
